The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Been neglecting pictures of my new pairs, 'cause my camera sucks. Didn't realize just how bad until I took these pictures. Will try again another day, maybe get some one on one time :)

Thanks again to budsbirds for helping me out.

Just for fun, this is where I was coming from, so very happy to have aquired brick like Reds:
Isn't it funny how much we liked our ??? RIR's ??? until we got the real thing. I don't have any of those left now. They sure did put out the eggs though. lol

These are pics I took at the show... they aren't great either, but:

Have to admire a NH cockerel. Like a weathervane...

took this one 'cause I vaguely recall someone trying to find white faced black Spanish... only one there, but it was listed as for sale. If someone knows how to track down the exhibitor... will post this on the HLF thread too.

on the cage the tag has a number a shower or owner or some kind of identifier. At the show they typically hand out papers with the numbers matched to contact info for the person in charge of that bird on that day. If the show has a website you might be able to get a copy of the contact info papers from a show contact person.

It's been a while since I shared images of my Ron Fogle birds. It saddens me that Bob B. is not here to see how they are turning out. But I need the help of the folks in the know here to help me choose the best two birds from the last four cockerels. I had fourteen males and have slowly put one by one into the freezer or roasting pan as the matured. There were no bad birds. It's been a real struggle to cull them out. Each one is magnificent in my eyes. I kept the two that I banded early on. They still look excellent. One is in the barn to keep safe. I don't have a great picture of him. But he is a *wow* bird. He doesn't treat the hens well and can't yet figure out how to cover them. I'll get better pictures of him soon. He is second choice for now. His head is turned. His comb is large but kind of sticks up in back. First choice is with the layers now. He treats the hens well and sticks with the flock. This is my #1 choice for breeding for 2014. A marvelous boy. These last two are beautiful but one is going into the freezer. I know not which. The last four we butchered were so large, they barely fit in my roaster pan. The best chicken I've ever eaten. For reals. I hope to never buy store bought chicken again. HRIR is a true dual purpose bird. My pullets started laying. I am looking forward to breeding my first starting in Jan. 2014. Please help me by critiquing my cockerels. They are seven/eight months old.
These birds seem to rainy day in the back. Is that their natural stance or just how they look in the pictures? Matt

These were posted way back at the beginning of the thread, but think a repost might be in order. I've saved them so I have a measuring stick when you Red guys finally get the best of me. LOL

I have a question. Are these pictures in the SOP book? This is all I've seen: Back: Long, moderately broad its entire length, carried horizontally. I've seen these pictures many many times but I don't know how anyone could put an exact measurement on these birds.
Not trying to be picky or cause friction. Just would like an answer.

They're from an old RIRCA newsletter I believe. You are right that the Standard does not have dimensions. And I wouldn't value this over the standard of course (come on, I have the SoP as my avatar!) but I do think its a good ballpark. I'll track down original source.

Hey there BGMatt, Please don't think that I am being picky on this. I do know for fact that Bob showed this picture many many times and am sure not going against him, I just wondered if he or someone else just put these measurements on them. I know that of all my birds especially the different bloodlines that I have are all different sizes. Some are longer bodied then others, some are a little taller etc. I can say for sure that my Nelson birds are longer then my Reese birds and my RC Underwood's are longer bodied then my SC Underwood's. lol I saw the SOP as your avatar, that's why I quoted your post. lol I guess this is sort of our private thing. ha,ha,ha. Don't you get upset with me.
I just butchered 2 Nelson boys yesterday and one was probably 2 inches or more longer and taller then the other. lol Who would have thunk it?
