The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Who here has the Mohawk strain? I'm interested in getting LF reds and I'm very interested in this strain. I'm looking for a trio but won't be able to get any until spring or next fall. I will be attending Wapekoneta in March and Lucasville in May. I will also be attending Lucasville in the fall and the Ohio national.

Thanks, Corey

We can help you. Drop me a pm and we can work something out.

I think I hatched to raise too many Reese/Mohawk birds this year. I am feeling pretty overwhelmed with them all and have been culling cockerels as fast as I can and still feel like I'm keeping the best. If anybody in my neck of the woods is interested in a great start with this line, PM me. I still have 12 cockerels and want to keep at most 4. Not even sure how many pullets are extra, but I sure don't want to keep them all. The parents of my birds are from Matt Ulrich that I got last year plus I have some of his 1/2 and 1/2s that I got this year (Illinois X Florida Reese birds). I just don't want to butcher them all if someone wants them. They are nice birds. I am taking 5 to the Safford, AZ show Jan 4, hoping the judge will help me decide which to keep. After that, the extras are all going to freezer camp.

Just a question how much are you asking for them

The pure Illinois birds are in the 9-10 month range, the 1/2 and 1/2 are 7-1/2 months. Haven't weighed all of them, but they are around 7 lbs. As far as price, that would depend on how many, what their quality is, & what sex ratio. I do raise all my birds on certified organic feed only, so it costs me a lot more to raise them. Probably would price a trio at $100.

These are not the best of pictures but here are a few of my Underwood Pullets. Most of them are 5-6 months old. Still have lots of room to grow.

And one of my Rhode Island Whites...she might give the reds a run for their money...LOL

Is your RIW SC or RC?

All of mine are RC Rhode Island Whites. They are from Ryon Carey in KS. If you go to page 3 of the link below from exhibition poultry you can see one of his females.

As you well know there are so few really good Rhode Island Whites out there. Seems that the hatcheries have forgotten what they are supposed to be like for I consider theirs (SC) more of a White Rock than a Rhode Island Red. A true Rhode Island White has to be a RC.

This is GREAT! I'm looking into getting some land and had been told that there were no real RIR's left, and that they had all been bread out into production birds.

It's been quite disheartening in a lot of ways doing my research into what breeds I want to take care of. Finding this post has just made my day! Thanks!

Timing is just right for you as now is one of the better times to get on a breeder's list for eggs or chicks.
