The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

http://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924003164260

I have two books and one of them is Blue Ribbon Reds which was one of the best books ever written on the subject of Rhode Island Reds. When this book came out the breed was on an up rise from great Rhode Island Red Club leadership and demand for the breed. I found this on the internet so you can read it. You can go back to this site type in Rhode Island Reds and find other great books which you can only find in old Vet Libraries today. You can not buy this stuff unless it’s on eBay for sale and you are lucky to find it.

So for all of you who asked me to try to make you a copy here is your copy. Save it as a favorite in your computer. Not much has changed in the old timers thoughts and why they breed this breed. The bird has gotten better in shape and color from those days as they did not have the kind of color they wanted but were working towards this and reached in the 1930s. Hope you enjoy it. Bob

These chicks were hatched 6/23/2011 The first picture was taken 7/6 that would make it about 2 weeks old, the second picture was taken 7/19 so that would be about right about 4 weeks old. I can't tell you if they were pullet or cockerel at that time but they are pure RIR's. Hope this helps.

Bob, thanks for the research and info. When was this book written? Keep up the good fight!

Hmm Ok. Maybe she really is. She is that bright redish color...
not the best picture! (facing toward the cam with her head down)

Bookmarked it on my computer! Very informative. Just wanted to post a few pics of some of my RIR bantams. The rooster came from Bob, and the hen came from Matt Johns. Hopefully I am getting chicks this spring and I am not sure what to do with these guys. I also have a RC rooster from Matt Johns. I need to keep the line of chicks that I am getting pure, so as I said, don't know what to do with them. Any suggestions? Also, to help me better understand how to judge these guys please tell me what is good and bad about them. I can tell you that the hen has poor wing color and is a little on the fat side from being spoiled by my kids. Also, the rooster was not in the mood for pictures because it was windy and cold. He usually stands up a little taller.

I see that your birds are teathered... does that clip/cable tie rub? I'm considering doing tie outs so that my birds can enjoy free roaming time but not get over the fence because I live next to a rural highway.

Actually, that was only to take the pictures.....lol. I clip that tie out on them when transporting them out in the open in case they get away from me. Especially my Phoenix bantams. They can fly very well. I have tied them out for short periods so they can get out in the grass, but never unattended or for long periods of time. If you are going to tether your birds, you need to use special tethers that will not rub or cut in to their leg. Also, I think I read somewhere that the rooster's must be old enough that their spurs are hard or something like that.
