The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

The transition is made! No more productions in my coop. Now all the red ones are true RIR.

Remember those Nelsons Fred posted photos of? I'm the PROUD new owner and breeding in training partner with him. Can't wait to expand the flock! I want them all to be RIR tried and true!

bluebirdnanny has excellent husbandry skills and a real love for these birds. Since we're "neighbors", it is a natural cooperative effort. Our hope is to hatch out as many of these Nelsons as we can this spring. The pullets are not laying yet, but we expect them to do so when this horrid winter finally fades away and something akin to spring comes along. These Reds are gorgeous beyond words.

Nanny is anxious to learn, grow and enter this brave new world. What's not to enjoy? Taking on new challenges is part of life. It's a delight to share it with you, bluebirdnanny.

Only a day and a half with this chicks and I'm really impressed. They are some tough little birds. This is Picolo. S/he bounced back from practically dead on arrival to bright and chirpy this morning. I've never had such a chilled chick survive before.

S/he also has a dark spot on the head. Is this an indication of anything in RIR? I've seen the white spot for barring, but never a dark spot without "chipmunk" stripes. All of the chicks have the dark "dipped in blood" look to their beaks. Flashy.

This is one of the older chicks in the batch. Already starting to get wing feathers.

These are my Red Island Red hen. They are now 7 month young. Verry nice and kind. When I walk in the garden they are with me ate my kids.
They fethers shining!!!:D

I have a RIW that is seriously broody so I gave her 8 eggs from HRIR pullets that I hatched out last spring from birds I got from Matt, so in three weeks we should have some chicks. The birds recently started laying and the eggs are good size. I had a couple of eggs for breakfast just so I could check the fertility and both eggs were fertile. Now I hope the rest I put under the broody are fertile also.

cmom let the hatching begin I just set my second batch for the year 108 eggs from 4 breeding pens I set up this year.

good luck with your broody hatch !

I'm planning to set another batch on the 16th. But with only 2 hens, I'm thinking it will be around 8 or 10 eggs. Maybe in a few years I'll have enough breeders to sett 100 eggs at once.
How many chicks are you planning to hatch this season?

sally. last season I hatched around 150 from 4 hens and 2 cocks .. now with 4 pens to work with I hope to hatch 300+ this year . I culled to 16 pullets and the 4 hens from last year. kept one of my cocks (the other was killed by a predator ) and 6 cockerels .. 4 breeders and 2 backups. but due to a problem with my lgd ( she was locked in a pen and my brother who helps me forgot to let her out one day ) I lost the 2 backup cockerels. mine are from Ron Fogel like yours :)
