The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

This is Roger. I found him dumped in the woods. He had apparently been there for over 2 weeks. Two month later he is in charge of him own flock!

I don't think he is too old from this picture. Do you have any other pictures? It's sad when people don't want their birds anymore and they just take them and dump them off somewhere. He is lucky you found him.

The term "heritage" is a recent invention and is basically a way to market purebred, Standard bred birds to those who may wish a well bred bird, but do not have an interest in exhibitions, per se.

In poultry, when a bird meets the Standard written for the breed, it is said to be purebred.

Your male that you found is fairly "pure", but he has some issues. His tail is pinched and is far too high, according to the Standard for the Rhode Island Red. He also looks to have a bent toe or two and his comb has too many points.

This particular thread is not dedicated to posting pictures of generic or hatchery or barnyard bred birds, but is specifically dedicated to discussing the breeding, showing and keeping of high quality, true-bred, bred to Standard Rhode Island Reds.

All that said, I'm glad you are taking care of that cockbird, Johnn. He's in good hands now.

Wonder if his toes have been broken.

I was wondering the same thing. Apparently whoever dropped him off didn't care for him too well. So glad he is now in a place where he will be well cared for. He may not be pure, but I believe he has some pure blood in him. I think it is good to see how birds should be according to the SOP and what birds look like that aren't SOP ( to the Standard of Perfection) so people can see the differences. As an old saying goes "one picture is worth a thousand words".

Wish I was so close to them.... no I take that back.... that THEY were that close to ME!

That is such a GREAT asset to have near! They have beautiful SOP bred poultry!!!

Thanks everyone, I was also wondering about his toes. I has just always assumed they had been broken or something...

I bought fertile hatching eggs sold as heritage rhode island reds. They are 8 weeks old now, and I'm wondering if they are actually heritage RIRs or production. I'm not very fond of production reds. Any info is greatly appreciated. I'm new to this
