The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

I have 5 hens and 1 roo. I thought that i
400
[/URL]was getting rir.but i was told bye a friend tthat they was not that might have some of the rir in them but that they dont look like them to him

These are just barnard, farm birds. nothing wrong with that, it's just that they are not Rhode Island Reds nor of the quality that this thread focuses on. If you want true bred Rhode Island Reds, you have to get them from a fancier, a person who breeds them correctly. Lots of folks on this thread got their start from someone else here. Maybe you can get a start with real Reds from someone this coming year.
Best wishes.

Just wanted to share some teaser pics of my Pine Grove(William Bennett) RIR's. Hopefully within the next week I will be choosing my breeders out of this bunch. I've really enjoyed raising these and hope to help others as well. Thanks Bob and William for the pointers with working with such great birds. I will share some pics of the hens later in the week. I'm so glad that I kept most of them for almost a year in that their potential has really shown just in the last month alone.

When I got these as chicks, Pine Grove(William) warned me about their appetites. He was right...lol. I have 16 roos and 25 hens that eat 150lbs of feed WEEKLEY!!! Yes, WEEKLEY! They are filling out quite nicely though and are solid.

Hello all,

I'm getting into back yard chickens, coop is almost built. I had been thinking about what breed to choose from for a small flock of 5-8. After reading into this thread RIR are my choice hands down.

The problem I am having is locating a breeder that deals with heritage RIR. I would prefer having birds of heritage over egg production. All I have found in my search for breeders are references to hatcheries. One hatchery MyPetChicken, has RIR listed in its heritage breeds. When I called them, the rep had to look it up and replied it was on the list of heritage breeds. I got a buyer beware kind of feeling off of that, and the picture looked like a production bird.

I'm hoping someone could point me in the right direction in starting my flock off right.
