The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

What is the height of a fence needed to keep the HRIR's in a pen without flying out? I am just wondering if my fence will work, 5'6".

perfect four feet is all I had. In regards to getting birds out west it just takes your name to be on next years list. There will be many who will have the top two strains available for you. Then you wil be a source for those folks next time. bob

Got a mesage today conserning the name I use in my old Rhode Island Red Strain of Red Large Fowl. How did you come up with this name Mohawk?. Here is a picture photograhed in 1927 by Poultry Artist Art Schiling the bird was shown at Ottawa Canada poutry show and then sold a year or so latter to Mrs. Donald Donaldson of Gerogia. I had her old strain and searched for this male and found his look about five years after I started breeding them. It was always there I just shook it to the surface in pushing my females to lay higher egg production.

Today there are about two breeders who have had these birds for over 13 years and about five new breeders who are doing a great job of keeping this 100 year old line going. I hope this helps you with the question. it was a good question and pertains to thread. bob

HallFamilyFarm,

I believe that is one of the "Mohawk" birds.

Here is the other, Note the comb it's a Rose Comb and not the often seen Single Comb

Hi docdandc,

My little ones get over fences that high. I would put screen or netting over the top--protects against predators like hawks. When they get big and heavy, they wont be able to jump that high, unless they have something to jump from. You should look up wing clipping. It's easy and does not hurt the chicken. This Forum has instructions Here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/how-to-clip-trim-the-wings-of-your-chicken-to-prevent-flight

Enjoy the chickens!

Was working on my web site which I lost the pass word to and finally got in. I typed in the History of the Mohawk Rhode Island Reds in my search engine and found this page. Interesting video of my old line male looks pretty good. Look at the color of these Reds. This guy is going to cross production Reds into my old line to improve fertility. Big mistake they will never be pure again so watch out if you buy birds from in future years. However, what you need to do is cross a male or female from the Florida Illinois Cross into this line then you will not dis troy the gene pool and also have increase in fertility. Thought you might like to see this. Also, for you beginners who come over to this thread you can see the real rhode island reds and the contrast between a production red which you may own. I bet this big Red male is not mean. bob

here is the article I wrote last year to explan the history.
