The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Well I have survived Grandparents camp for two weeks. We had a great time. I am exhausted. 8 grandkids, one DIL and 3 others here some of the time eating and sleeping. Drove 3 1/2 hrs yesterday to Atlanta Ga to take the last two to the airport and made it home at 9pm last nite.. Needless to say I have rested this afternoon. Headed to Church shortly. I took a few juvie photos this morning while I was feeding before the heavy rain got here.
I have about 45 chicks or so growing out at various stages. I am going thru 100 lb of chick starter about every six days. Hoping to have a few keepers.
Here are some of the various aged larger group

The black cockerel in this pic is a wide load and should be really good keeper. His daddy is a big boy.

I have about 20 more black chicks growing out in another pen. They are younger

Ok Jeremy, I went out and took this photo of one of the hens this afternoon. The farm camera was out of batteries so I had to take it with my cell phone. There was finally a gap in the rain long enough for me to go out. This hen is laying pretty big eggs. They are averaging between 2.7-3.1 ounces! Jumbo is anything bigger than 2.5 ounces I believe.Big eggs make Big chicks right? :)

She looks very pretty and seems to have a nice mottled pattern, not overly white.

I'll be eagerly anticipating more pictures when you get another break from the bad weather!

A couple of my lavender orps starting crowing a few days ago- orpingtons have THE sweetest sounding crows! They nearly sound like doves cooing. Not loud & obnoxious sounding that the SFH roos- OMG they are like nails on a chalk board!

Thank you cbnovick and Nellie.
I did have a great time. Today I did something that rarely happens. I layed down on the couch and rested except to check on chicks about three times in the rain. Finally we got a break after about 7 inches.. They were so glad to be able to go outside.
Back to working tomorrow.
We are building new coops in a different area of the yard in the fall and I can't wait. We are going to tear down the old ones. They are much needed.

That's a ton of rain and it's no fun brooding/growing out chicks when it's that darn wet!
