The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

DragonLady have you ever used DE on your flock?i added a cat litter pan to my orps coopi put sand in the pan & some DEi figured when they take a dust bath they will get a little of the DE on them which should keepany bugs from thinking my orps would be a good home.we also add a drop or 2 ACV in their 5 gallons of drinking wateri got tired of dirty water so i added a bucket with 4 nipples & a lid that has a hinge in the middle for easy filling. piglett
DE will not keep Northern Fowl mite off your birds. They are nasty little red specs of what look like red pepper bugs, that can suck the life out of a bird in a hurry. I use Permethrin liquid and dust. After 50+ years with birds, I use what works.

I second that. DE is a dessicant and nothing more unless you use the type for pools which will harm your birds.

A much better dust bath is wood ashes. At my old house I had a "burn pile" spot that I'd burn wood in, and after it all cooled they LOVED dust bathing in the ashes. Never had mites or anything. But Dragon Lady's regimen is really better. Just saying, if you refuse to use the Permethrin, at least let them dust bathe in wood ash.

I took a few photos today. I mainly wanted to post a pic of Turks cause he amazes me with his size. His type is not great, he has his flaws but his size at 8 months. He is probably the broadest chicken I have ever seen. His dad was big but he has topped him. I am going to keep him and see if he lives and how big he gets.

This is Turks granddaddy so here is the proof you can take a shorter but good typed Cock over a large hen and produce larger fowl. I put the son of Cock pictured here over a very large hen because he was larger and he produced even larger

Ok, today was picture day at the farm and I managed to get a few decent ones.

Here is a picture of my Silver Laced Roo. He is such a good tempered boy and takes great care of his ladies.
