The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Have any of you noticed if there is a correlation between the start of surging hormones (pink faced) and the slowing down in growth in the pullets? With my cockerels I have noticed that by the time they have a good sized comb and wattles, with red faces (6 months or so), they don't get any taller, just get more girth.
Most bird species are fully sized, skeleton wise, by the time they are fully fledged. They continue to gain weight after that, but their skeletons do not continue to grow. Most Orps are fully fledged at about 6 months old.

I need to send pictures to you then. I need to talk about F2 with you. I need to pull out my silhouettes, which are the type I'm working towards, and think about it a bit. Then I need a good chit chat.

But I have one more question for you all. How about tail height in the pullets? Will it change much after 6 months? I need to know that before I plan out strategy. Last year I failed to "observe and record" once they started laying and my face was glued to the incubator.

I would love to see a Porcelain English Orpington...maybe I should start on that project too    all I need are some good Jubilees!!

I am working on it... I am worried about type because I think the jubilees and the lavenders both lack type... In my opinion that is. All my lavenders end up way too leggy with awful feather quality. The jubies are just a bit too small. I guess I just have to wait and see how they grow out.

Quote: I have a project going now for the lavenders it will be a few years before it is complete but my #1 goal at the end of this project is to have big fluffy lavenders like my black pullet below.

So once I get the lavs where I want them I will start on my own Porcelain project

We are starting on a lavender project this year. We have two black pullets who are very "low" in shape and a lavender roo who is too leggy. His feather quality is not too bad other than his tail. Depending how the offspring turn out we may breed back to dad or breed to each other to get the 25% lavender chicks.

Most pullets' tails are completely in by 6 months, so the tail angle should not change much, if at all. Can't wait to see photos !
