Vickie, Interesting that these originated from David Pownell Lines , he is considered one of the top breeders and has been working diligantly in whites trying to clean them up..I was reading about him on poultry garden..hes amazing man..in 2010 he had over 200 birds stolen! and some prize winning aylesbury ducks ..heartbreaking...there was a rash of poultry theft reported in UK during that time..seemed like every week somone was reporting thefts..it was reported later the birds were dead, theft by Romanis (sp?) most likley eaten...years of hard work gone in a flash

this is the list of birds taken from David.2010 in one night

50 large buff Orpingtons,
30 large black Orpingtons,
20 black bantam Orpingtons,
20 large white Wyandottes
20 exhibition Aylesbury ducks.

In the North West, near Manchester

I know, I asked what are romanis? they said, romanians just passing through the area..they had quite the feast..and news reports said they were deported back to romania..took a while for them to figure out what had happened they kept thinking they might start to show up in sale rings and shows..but they didnt..later found out why. all were dead..that is a lot of birds so Im trying to picture how they pulled this off..the area is fairly remote..or enough so that no one heard a thing. and he didnt have security cameras ect...who would have thought............................

I also worry about my birds at night. We have heard of people in our area having their birds stolen but as far as i know it is only a few at a time. the most I have heard of at one time was 15. but it still worries me.

I'm sorry but I just cannot get over the fact that this stuff happens. Not only do you have to worry about predators looking for food, but the concept of stealing chickens is amazing. :/

I does still happen . I had a young pair of Buffs stolen last year. Now I have cameras and padlocks on all the gates when I leave here , and at night.

I shipped some jubilee chicks and the top of the box was ripped off, and three chicks were missing. I'm not sure if they were taken, or just lost.

Sorry you had your buff pair stolen dragonlady. Do you think they know what they got, or maybe they are waiting for your golden chickens to lay golden eggs. I usually find thieves to be ignorant.

we have security cameras everywhere..even up in trees down the driveway due to construction equip..they added a few to roof trained at poultry pens w trip lights..the driveway cams caught a neighbors dogs leaving another neighbors yard w a rir in his. mouth..neighbor said his dogs didnt do this..cameras didnt lie..

Out here if they are taken by someone it is usually to eat them. I walk around my place with a big gun when they are picking grapes and I let the dogs bark all they want at the workers. They also know the fence has hot wires and I think most folks think the night guard lights are some kind of security devices. BTW, those night guard lights don't work for predators here.....they do look impressive to humans at night though. I have one on the peak of my roof just for people. I have never had any of those kinds of problems, but I want to keep it that way.
