Yes, he is Isabel, but they could almost be mistaken for lavenders, this is a couple pics of his dad,

Gorgeous!! How far away from the 'ladies' do you keep your bachelor pad?

The boys area is about 300 feet from our breeding pens. The boys are up front and the girls are in the back of our farm, however............sometimes some roosters just can't be with the other boys and I have them in single cages. And .......sometimes, even after they have been together for months, someone gets crabby and starts a fight

.

For the most part the boys do get along so far away from the ladies.

We will have a few more snows..unfortunately..it is gong to be -2 Sunday. Than we will be blessed with 4 inches of snow Monday.

I am pretty crabby about this years winter.

How well do your bachelors handle being in single cages? I've got my Australorp rooster in his "time out" cage to let my hens recover from feather loss from him, and one of them has started to molt. I'm giving her time to fully feather back in and then they are going to get pretty hen saddles.

The Orpingtons seem to do pretty good. I don't keep them in single cages very long. In the warmer months I have areas outside but there is no electricity to them so I can not use them in the winter months. Some roosters DO NOT do well in a cage. I had an Ameraucana rooster who had a foot injury and had to stay confined to a cage till his foot healed and he got so mean I had to cull him

Their single wood cages are generally 4ft X 4ft by 40 inches high and are set up in my main barn. I only have a few of those so in a pinch I will use the extra large plastic veri kennels (we used to raise rottweilers) and right now I am using some veri kennels

One of my Lavender Cuckoo roos got a little rip in his wattle, and I think the hens are vampires

. They absolutely would not leave it alone, and he didn't mind at all. He would stand stately with his head in the air and let them pick at it till it was bleeding all over.

My 3 year old Partridge roo decided to take on one of the young boys and now looks a little like "Rocky" (single cage).

2 red roos who are brutal on the hens are also on "time out" (each in a single cage)
Right now I have roosters everywhere..............I am so glad spring is almost here

Have you tried to give it to older chicks? Adults?(I did) If you have, did you observe any weird side effects?
Have you killed any chicks giving Mereks? (I did)

Yes, and I wanted some of yours to go with mine

but as always shipping is so dang rough on the eggs I didn't get any to hatch

I have a question for those who do Mereks immunizations.
Have you tried to give it to older chicks? Adults?(I did) If you have, did you observe any weird side effects?
Have you killed any chicks giving Mereks? (I did)

Hi Vicki, I give it to any birds that I get regardless of their age. It will not hurt anything at all. I have given it for many years and have never had an adverse reaction, either from day olds or juveniles. I even experimented with second and third doses with no adverse reactions.

The reason I experimented with a second and third dose at 2-3 week intervals before they went to their outside home from the indoor brooder was because out of a couple hundred chicks that I raise per summer for my self, I would see maybe one chick (juvenile) that would express Marek like symptoms (which we would cull). That is less than one percent so is pretty good. The multiple vaccinating did not change that. After 2 years of double vaccinating I would still see about one chick a year, so we went back to vaccinating only once.

I have never killed a chick with the vaccine, what makes you think you did? (you can PM me) The one thing that one would need to be careful of are the air sacs in the neck area. If the vaccine was accidentally injected into one of the air sacs it would kill the chick.

I will try to get a picture how I hold the chick and give the shot so as to make sure I do not hit an air sac. Also a vaccine reaction would also be possible, I have not seen it in chicks but did have it in a calf I vaccinated (not for Mareks

)
