Nellie,Awww, I would love to see pics Dee. I have a toe punch and want to try it but haven't done it yet.....I want to toe punch all my chicks. There are so many people who are selling birds that they say came from me and a lot of them did not. If I can permanently mark (almost like branding) them then there would be no question as to whether they were from me.![]()
I am not meaning this to be radical but what's happening to the imported Orps is really sad. People are breeding two birds together and getting chicks that look similar to an imported version, then labeling them as coming from someone who actually has them (thedragonlady, Ewe Crazy Farm, Heirloom, etc etc etc - I think you get the picture)
Several times in the past 2 weeks I have corrected a few auctions I saw that said their birds originated from me, when, by the pictures they clearly did not. In each situation when we got to the bottom of it they were not what they were supposed to be. Unknown to the seller as they bought them from someone in good faith, spent a lot of money purchasing them and much time raising them, just to find out they were not what they were supposed to be.
I can take credit for a mess I made all by my self - I don't want to take credit for one that I didn't make. I feel like the "poultry police" when I email someone about the wording in their auction
. All joking aside I think it is genetically important for people to know what that have, and equally important quality wise to know what they are likely to produce in future generations, otherwise the beautiful birds that were imported will be lost..............![]()

OK having said all that........Vicki, any suggestions on which toe to punch for permanent ID (the easy one)? Any adverse effects on the chicks or any situation that it should not be done? I am just going to punch one. Does it bleed.........![]()
Nellie,
There is virtually NO bleeding, but you must make sure the little plug is removed from the hole you punch. I found if you punch , and twist, it comes out easily. There is a chart here on BYC about toe punching numbers. I would suggest to assign one to each hatch you do a year.
It has been amazing to me, since I produce so few birds a year, to see the supposed birds that people have from me. I KNOW who has my birds.I too have had to report numerous sellers of bogus birds.
I've seriously considered micro chipping, but for now, the cost is still a bit prohibitive. You could punch the month of your birthday on one foot, and the day on the other. The chances of another bird in the same breed having that punch is pretty slim.
Nice to see all the pictures. I love the new colors, Nellie.
I toe punch when if take them out of the incubator. Seems to work well for me. They almost never bleed, but some squeak kinda sad when I do it. I pretty much just hatch for me though... So not sure how it would be received by others.
I'm not sure how you can get around people dropping your name if your a big name breeder and have fantastic birds. I don't have that problem. I can usually tell by the pictures when people are being less than honest.
I have warned a couple people, but ended up getting in kinda-sorta trouble for it. So now I can't say anything. It bothers me to see people about to waste a bunch of money on something that is not accurately depicted. I like wasting my money on pretty birds, so I take it personally, ha ha.
Here you go Nellie. There is a lot of misrepresentation online.....it's easy to do , so people do it to make a buck. Every line of every breed has people saying that this is so and so's line. It only takes two years to destroy a line.....some could destroy it quicker, but two years is the average in the wrong hands...so it usually does not matter who's line it WAS.
