The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

This heat is unbearable. It is almost 6PM and it is 103* here. Two of my Orp girls were going down. I brought them in the attached garage which has an air conditioner vent. Actually, I brought 4 of them in. I don't know how much more they can take. It is going on 3 weeks of this 100+ degree weather. The first sight of rain is 40% chance on Monday with a high of ONLY 95.

I am sorry for responding so late... I have been busy putting veggies in the freezer. Thank you all for your kind comments about the garden and our little ham, Isaac.

Krista... My heart goes out to you... I am soo sorry that Maerks has raised its ugly head at your house.

It could hit any of us at anytime. I have been trying to read up on it.. Wished we knew a specialist that would answer our questions rather than relying on the internet.

That is terrible kathy.. yikes. It was soo hot here in NH today... I was too scared to check the temp guage soo I didn't. All of my Pugs spent most of the day inside there air conditioned room. They are going out for potty breaks but that's it... Too darn hot out there for those little fat fellers.

All my chickens are panting and drinking lots of water. I was very surprised to find any eggs in the boxes muchless 12<< But there they were. God Bless them

We are headed out to walmarts tonight to get a couple of box fans to bungie in the windows for exhaust. That should help.. Just honest to goodness didn't have time to go today.

The heat was unbearable here in NYS today for the first time..we have coasted through with beautiful weather until today..it was 105!!! butexpected to start moving out tonight.

sorry to hear that you are dealing with mereks disease..its a terrible thing, we went through it many years ago and chose to keep breeds that have a natural b factor in thier genes- blood that makes them naturally immune...most mediteranian birds like leghorn ect are mostly unaffected, australorps are afforded prety good protection, some breeds are highly suseptable to mereks like dominiques and sebrights and some say that silkies are suseptable also..sebrights or any birds that have been vaccinated should never have a problem thou...best to do it if you have susseptible breed within a few days of hatch. we had never had the diesease in 25 years at our other farm and no birds came in or went out, we bred our own the vet said most likley carried in by wild birds and thier dander..we had a couple birds that survived and went back to normal after long rehab but most had to be destroyed sadly vet said the survivors carried the b factor and gene diluted ...Its like people who actually are unaffected by HIV and yes they do exist..they carry a gene mutation , a vestage from the days of the plague they were also unaffected by plague same gene mutation that allowed thier ancestors to escape AIDs infection..strange but true.

Aveca.. so after your birds got it... and you had some survivors.. knowing they are carriers....how did you handle that.. Did you start vaccinating all your chicks after that until your adult carrier birds had died off??

ALSO>. the million dollar question... is Mareks transferable to cockatiels?? Would it kill a healthy adult cockatiel???

I'm interested also. What I've read says carriers will not get sick or die from it. Any new young bird exposed to Marek carriers can get it...thus all new chicks must be vaccinated immediately. Right after they come out of the incubator...no hatching out from mama. The eggs are safe...can be sold for those wanting to raise the breed. Also, vaccinated chicks. I think once a bird is over 5 months old they are not at risk but I could be wrong on that.

I don't know how farmers do this for a living. Being all dependent upon Mother Nature. This heat is killing everything.... humans, animals, crops. It has been at least 3 weeks of over 100 degree heat here. No rain. It is worse than a desert. The nearest relief in site is 30-40% chance of rain Monday along with a high temp of only 98 Sun and 95 Monday. TEN day forecast, that is the best.

I have lost 2 Jersey Giants, as well, and a 16 week old Delaware cockerel. I have an attached garage with an air conditioning vent. I have brought my Orps in the last few nights. That just wasn't enough.

Some old pictures of my sweet sweet Julie............. RIP.
