PLEASE excuse my ignorance but could you please explain the differences from English Orpingtons & the regular American ones. I have both. In English, I have a trio of Buff from Jimm & Bonnie Sallee here in California. He said they came from Carry Brit out of Oklahoma who has been raising them a long time. I also have a splash cockerel & blue pullet from Jeremy in Oakland. They are all great..........I absolutely love them. My confusion is that I have 2 pullets from Gumpsgirl that she says have no English blood in them at all & the dark blue one I bought from Cheryl is huge like the English ones & beautifully fluffy. What is it I should look for to tell the difference from bird to bird. The hatch mate to the dark blue pullet is lighter in color & not nearly as large & fluffy. Both of them from Gumpsgirl through Cheryl.
Thanks

There is a difference in the tail angle, higher in england, and the length of leg, shorter in england, but thats pretty much all the english tend to be more fluffy though.

Hi Karen,

There are quite a few differences in the English Orp and the American Orp. The English Orpington is quite a bit bigger and heavier. The chests are much rounder and fuller, more of a barrel chest. The back is much shorter. The head is broader. The tail angle is higher and the tail is the shape of a horseshoe. Then of course all the gorgeous feathers. Notice all the loose feathering down around the legs, not necessarily fluff.

When the pair you got from Jeremy get older, you will definitely be able to tell the difference between the English Orps and the American Orps. The difference is very easy to see.

Hope this helps.

An excellent book on Orpingtons is the 1911 Reliable Poultry Journal. Not much has changed in a 100 years. This book is available online for FREE at AMAZON.

Here is a few of the better APA USA Orps at Crossroads. You can see the differences when you compare these Buffs and the UK Orps on this thread. Like the ole saying. A PICTURE SAYS A 1,000 WORDS.
You can see the longer backs and compare the heads. Pretty much everything mentioned in the Reliable Poultry Journal can still aplly today.

Julie - Goldie is going to be quite the looker. She is also a very sweet and gentle little girl and not at all flighty. Yes, Minerva still is a showbird - she is gorgeous. Matilda is too, though not as big as the others. Matilda is such a clown. She has the goofiest personality and she is always the one getting into things she is not supposed to be in.

I'm hoping to get a few more chicks this spring out of Winston & Clementine, Winston, Minerva & Matilda, and maybe a few Winston & Goldie chicks, too.

You guys/gals are all great. Thank you so much for all the great information. I can't wait til it gets light outside so I can go look at the birds. I am really interested in comparing Gumpsgirl's dark blue APA to the UK ones. I am so impressed with her.
