Aspen,
You said the BO's are nicer type. I would take the offspring to each other to assure your not reinforcing the lesser quality type. Once you have introduced the better genetics you should be able to get some offspring from that breeding of brother to sister which has the type you want and also have the Lemon Cuckoo gene you seek. But this is just me. Others may only want to get the Lemon Cuckoos to sell eggs right way/ Really depends on where you like to go with this variety..

After I breed the brothers to the sisters what do I breed their offspring to? Will they be buff colored or LC colored? I have plenty of bad type Lemons. I would really like to see this color on a chicken that actually looks like an Orpington should look, instead of looking like junk from a hatchery. Sick

They aren't real good but it's always "that look" lol. Olive just cracks me up.

Oh if the wing looks funny it's because it was clipped. She and her sister were sneaking over the fence a couple months ago.

I think one of my hens killed herself
sad.png

they are in one of those rubbermaid sheds, it's approx 8x10 so I know it's plenty big for the 4 girls and 1boy that was in there.
there is a roost that dh made in the shed, it's 18 inches off the floor BUT they somehow get up to a shelf in the shed that is over 5 feet up(not using the roost as it is not even close to it and at opposite end), dh is taking the shelf out today with this loss. When we open their coop you usually need to step back as it seems they need a "runway" to get down. I think she might have tried getting down with the door closed and broke her neck. I still don't understand why they use this shelf that is so small I have no idea how they keep their big bodies on it since it is against a wall

. There was no other trauma to her

has anyone ever suffered a loss from them roosting too high?

I am so sorry for your loss

. But there is a condition where they actually have a heart attack (no warnings) and fall of the perch dead. More common than one would think.

So sorry to hear of your hen! It's very possible that this is exactly what she did. I have watched mine get down from a 4' roost and they do sort of need a "runway." They can't fly straight down at all. And the bigger they are, the longer the runway. My coop is 12' long and the roost is on one wall. When they fly off, the biggest are almost at the other wall.

You have to watch them too because they can hurt their keel bones getting down. That roost was even higher (to discourage them from roosting somewhere else) but my rooster actually bruised his keelbone. So it's 4' now and the floor is softer too. More bedding. Really mine is still too high but if I lower it any more they'll be roosting right in the window sill. In handy reach of a possum or racoons paw.

these guys are less than a year old, does that matter? The reason I think she tried getting down and hit the wall is she wasn't under the shelf, but against the wall on the opposite side, right next to the door
