Thanks Julie!

I'll keep you posted. Still waiting for main tail feathers to come in. They're just now starting.
Kathyinmo kindly fixed the photos for me, so you should be able to see them. The pullet is on my avatar.

Babies from Rebel Yell eggs: I (personally) think they are gorgeous. They kind of look like mini ostrichs right now. they are funny. If you see some funny "golden" colored babies....I have a few sexlinks being raised by this momma for my egg laying group. I just added them in with the momma and the orp babies.

Yes, this "momma" is a barred rock...she went broody...I gave her eggs.

Is this a "splash"?

How is this for a good "stink eye" LOL.

4312: What beautiful babies!! I've got mine brooding under a Barred Holland. And I believe that second picture is a cull. You should send it over here immediately! <hee hee> you lucky thing!! Looks like a splash to me, I soooo want one.

I just hatched out some beautiful babies from Renie. I'm trying to feather sex them... but can't quite figure the game out.

1) Am I comparing the chicks to each other to see who is farther along, and then the pullets are in the lead in the feather growing department? Is it possible to sex one by itself? or must you compare?
2) Can I compare tail feather growth in about a week?

Here is one of the fatties at 2 days.... any guesses? Sorry pic isn't better it was extremely hard to hold chick still and take pic. So I relied on 8 yr old to take pic.

And here are 2 of the babies:

Orps don't feather sex well. Needs to be a fast feathering/slow feathering cross for it to really work. But it's fun to try, I've done it. Wasn't any more accurate than any other method. Since you have a 50/50 chance for males then it's about 50% accurate. But no, can't tell by the pic. Need to see the new feathers starting to grow, at 2-3 days. Basically a female's would grow like in two rows, a male they're all teh same length like male: iiiiii and female: lilililil You'll be looking at the feather shaft that they're starting to grow from rather than the ends of the fluff.

Can you show us pics of more then one of your babies wings so we can compare. I am learning how to feather sex also, it would probably help to compare. I am thinking boy on that one though, as I said I am new though. :0)

Very cute babies.
Yep, my #2 photo might be a cull....think your right......LOL...NOT!!!! They are at a funny stage. They all look like mini Ostriches.
Sorry can't help you with the feather sexing, heard it is hard to do that with orps.

eta: Hmmmm I think that these babies might need to be sent to me ...ya' know culls and all. I could give the a real nice home.

They are too young to make any kind of accurate comment. When I look at the butt shot in the first pic I see two segments (top and bottom) like a figure 8. That may go away..........maybe. Color is great and even. The second pic straight on. The head does not look wide enough for me, but again this is a young bird.
Overall they look like good examples of English Orps. When they finish ask me again.

I have never really liked the buff orpington, cant really explain it..for the first time i can say i am impressed ..i see them all of the time, an occasional nice one..these are really lovley birds..i cant wait to see in a few years how you are doing with them.are you planning to show any this year? ...what a treat to see those in person !!!!..thou they are something im never going to buy..i know you had a vision as to how you wanted them to look.i think to show , would the tail tenting need to be a bit more ironed? nice type..meaty bird as intended.

i thought you said you are waiting for main tail to come in..hope you post more pics for us because when i think buff orpington i think big - round. meaty bird.
very exciting..not sure why i had not seen marc's birds befor.

not really sure why i never really liked buffs befor..some of them too much emphasis on parts that you dont eat maybe..some are kind of scrawny , scraggly looking, thou big might feed a family of 1....not great coloring on some. toes bent all they way backward, wings like a seabright.. dont really know..they were meant to be great table fowl..nothing ever jumped out at me about them befor..couldnt find much to get excited about ..like meat..i would catch myself saying, yea that parts nice but wheres the beef?....i really like these..

i was reading one of those old shell to showroom books last night..i think people seemed to have a little better grasp on what they wanted, there were table fowl, eggs layers, combos, and ornamentals.they used to very heavily penalize a wyandotte featured head and plymoth rock brest on any orpington..

i wish there were more egg shows, or division 2 show egg samples with the hen.like around a lot of europe...rather than worrying about a toenail..what kind of meat quality do they have...does that perfect toenail color bird lay high quality egg? that part is a little lost on americai think..we tend to dwell on a part that would never even make it into a stew.I have an australorp hen, little miss BBB and BV , but she has spotty eggs..
