The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

My Orp males are sweet, and even sweet to baby chicks. They do not seem to have the same need to make a pecking order and leave that to the girls. They do not like fighting and avoid it unless they are worried about girls. I even have that new GLO male chick, and he feeds other chicks. Now that is sweet.

Kiniska, the beatles lay eggs, which turn into the mealworms. The mealworms turn into beatles. Once you have a nice size colony, you just feed some of the worms and leave some so that the cycle isn't broken and you can continue to have more treats for the chicks. 4 coops?! Wow you're jumping right into the fun.

lualshannon, the first time I heard one of the cockerels crow, I suspected it was a crow but also thought...maybe something is wrong

delisha, I would have loved to seen the GL cockerel feed the other chicks. Such sweeties.

I sort of figured it was a cycle, but was thinking the beetles might be able to escape. As long as they don't have wings I will give it a try.
As for the coops, They aren't large coops. The largest ( Orpington Coop) will be in the barn with my goats the others will be free standing.

Thanks Deek!

The beetles do have wings but they cannot fly. So long as the container allows for a couple inches of slick sides above their bedding they can't get out.

Oh and make sure the top is screened or ventilated really well or it will begin to get an ammonia smell to it.
