The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Jeremy,
It would be a perfect world if everyone would disclose their genetic defects. Plus recessive genes can pop up with anyones stock. I agree with you the bird should be put in the freezer.

Mr. Shaffer, a boy can dream, can't he?

It sure would make it a lot easier for new fanciers who get into the hobby thinking they've started off with "the best money can buy" and such.

I feel your pain. Wish I had a barn. Not sure where you are, but I've gotta worry about keeping up with all the frozen waterers in the winter, so I try to downsize to my best birds.
we are in new hampshire
last year we had a heated waterer in the big coop which was a big help
but we still had frozen water in the smaller coops :(

My goodness what a bunch of silliness next time I will ask my questions amongst the less hysterical All lines carry unwanted recessive genetics Outcrossing will help These birds are Marc Sacre I am sure the English he imported were not the best of Englands best or they never would have come across the pond I already said I intend to look for a black split for chocolate though there are no shows south of Fairbanks so maybe I will use him to make chocolate sizzles or something :)

It sucks when you get sold a bird with a fault. You are right that all lines have faults but it is not silliness for it to be concerning, or for people warning how serious of a fault it is. I would be pretty upset if I spent good money on a bird and it had a fault like that. I would be downright mad if that person was breeding a cock bird with that visible fault and did not disclose it. You did not say that was your intent, and I did not see any flaming like anyone thought you were. I think sometimes people can be a bit touchy about things like that... I've spent a lot of money on chickens- lol- so I know I can be... "Silly" ;)

I Agree, Lasterlass I dont think anyone was trying to come across rudely. as Christabelle said, I would like to know of someone was breeding a DQ in their lines, honestly I would, I would also like to know if they had tossed in another breed trying to improve something. all sorts of things to disclose :)
a lot is lost in a forum type post, no tone of voice to help one along, its easy to read more into a post than there really is, I have done it

I hatched him and none of the parent stock or the parents parent stock have them So its luck of the draw You know "stuff" happens The only frustrating part is finding a black

I have blacks, lines from Julie and Joy and one from marc sacre, they are huge and right now I have a couple cockerels growing out, they are around 3-4 months old. my last big hatch I hatched 27, got 7 blues and the rest were black!! I will have an extra one or two that needs a home soon...

My understanding is it has to be split for chocolate AND I live in Anchorage Alaska I will probably wait for Spring and buy someones Cull IF the PO will still ship them

And THANK YOU everyone for sharing your knowledge

I may have a spare cockerel in the Fall or Spring if you are interested. He would be unrelated to your other Chocolates

Boy if you miss a few days on this thread you miss a lot. I am trying to catch up from the weekend, since I was pretty busy building pens and moving chickens. But aren't we all...

Lots A Cluckin – I am so sorry for your loss. The other night I had two strays come up in the yard and they started running around my rabbit pen. I ran them off and locked the gate behind them. We ended up fencing a large area around our farm because of strays. Unfortunately, we have unwanted animals dumped on our road a few times a year. So sad!

This response is a little late but I love the fluffy roundness of the English Oprington and they are totally addicting. Probably my biggest mistake (good and joyful one) was finding this thread and all the beautiful birds posted on it. I just knew I wanted to walk out and see my pens full of them.

I would love to have a Large Fowl Chocolate and maybe one day someone will just send me one :) .

Of course when I win the lottery I will just buy an entire flock and new barn for them. One day!

Happy Tuesday!

Debbie

This may be a little off topic,.hope not.
I had posted earlier that I purchased a 100% English cockerel,sight unseen.........
Paid a lot of money for him and did not ask the right questions....just an emotional reaction to losing my beautiful roo.
Anyway, the problem right now is he is way to rough on the hens. He was causing them to lose feathers
and made them scream when mating...................I thought perhaps he did not have enough hens
so I added some of my layers ....He has 6 now and the problem did not improve.......
I have separated him. I am thinking I just need to send him where all lousy Roo's go.
I want a Roo like my old Roo.............beautiful, laid back. he even allowed Serama Roos to live in his the coop
and protected them.
Anyway, I will be looking for a cockerel a little later..........
There is a question in here. I have never experienced a Roo that tore their hens up.
Is this something that will change as he matures or is he just a lousy lover?
Thanks

A very long time ago there were rosecomb orpingtons as well as single comb..I think these genes will crop up time to time.. a side sprig is something that crops up even in the very best stock...it can lie dormant in the genetics and just show up in stock down the road... Today we try to eliminate it by substituting for a different bird in the breeding pen..Im sure it will show up here and again..but the thing to do is just keep focused and know that you will need to not use this bird as a breeding bird..... and they mean to help you ...Some people like to be blunt in a response..just getting to the point of what you asked trying to help with advise.
