The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

This may be a little off topic,.hope not.
I had posted earlier that I purchased a 100% English cockerel,sight unseen.........
Paid a lot of money for him and did not ask the right questions....just an emotional reaction to losing my beautiful roo.
Anyway, the problem right now is he is way to rough on the hens. He was causing them to lose feathers
and made them scream when mating...................I thought perhaps he did not have enough hens
so I added some of my layers ....He has 6 now and the problem did not improve.......
I have separated him. I am thinking I just need to send him where all lousy Roo's go.
I want a Roo like my old Roo.............beautiful, laid back. he even allowed Serama Roos to live in his the coop
and protected them.
Anyway, I will be looking for a cockerel a little later..........
There is a question in here. I have never experienced a Roo that tore their hens up.
Is this something that will change as he matures or is he just a lousy lover?
Thanks
probably like all young men..bulls in a china shop..they all have different personalities too..chickens are all instinct..they don't really think about what they are doing..they react to their environment...they arnt capable of thinking like that..some come that way naturally but it is rare...he probably wasn't raised with some older hens that would teach him how to behave..now hes sorting all that out..older roosters and hens teach the young ones a thing or 2 about how to behave..and where the limits are..

With the rain comes a little sunshine :) My first English Buff Babies are starting to lay :) Found a pullet egg in the grow out yard today :)
Congrats!!

I am pretty sure one of my 22 week old lavender orp pullets laid today too..I am not 100% sure because they are in the coop with the layers but it was a tiny egg like a quail egg but it is perfectly shaped!

Look how tiny LOL so cute!! it is next to a AA battery for size comparison

I have all types of chickens, from easter eggers to seramas and English orps. It has been raining here in florida everyday, and some have gotten sick, but not one of the English. Could it be from where they are from?

I wouldn't be surprised Australorp, it is nearly always raining hear. Mine are struggling at the moment because we have a heat wave, they are all gasping. I am doing what I can to keep them cool.

Just a little about roosters in general..Just my experiences

They come in all different personalities. Some are terrified to breed, some are aggressive, some are sweet natured. As they mature, they do settle down. If they are raised with older hens when they are young, they are a bit different. If they are raised in a bachelor pad, they will come out like a 14 year old boy in a room filled with naked tied up women. They just can't help themselves. Once they settle in, they settle down. Orpingtons are sweet natured usually. I recently received an adult English Orpington, after his confinement was up I put him with 3 other hens. It was not pretty for a week. It was hard to watch. I even had a few torn combs and necks. I even had to stitch a hens head up. My DH thought it was funny, I was not as amused. He has been here for 3 months now and you would never think it was the same bird. He is calm and loving and very good with chicks. He even calls them to eat and feeds them. He is a wonderful bird.

In 35 years of raising chickens I have had a variety of roosters. Most of them settled down. Sometimes you do get one that is off in the head, but that is rare.

I appreciate the responses..............I will try to see him through kinder eyes..............
I just keep comparing him to my Old Roo.................need to stop that...................
