The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Yes but choc would be listed as AOV as I beleive only blk bantam or white and buff are recognised..Walt or Vickie know more.

The whole AOV thing has me a bit stumped. I recently showed a project Bantam Cochin (MF). I entered her as AOV and the show secretary called me a few days before the show and suggested I enter her instead as Mille Fleur. He said it was to gain recognition of the project. It didn't matter much to me as she was my daughter's showmanship bird and we didn't expect her to place.

I believe I will be showing a partridge Orp in Virginia in November. They will be 6 months by then and hopefully filled out enough to look decent. I think I'll ask the show secretary how they want the bird entered.

Agreed. She looks like a pretty Blue Andalusian pullet. : )

Well she was part of the Rare Chick assortment which did include Andalusians and Orpingtons, I thought that she best matched a Blue Orpington chick though. But I agree, now that she is older she doesn't look like an Orpington anymore.

Neither the APA nor the ABA include AOV classes in their sanctioned shows. Some Fairs have AOV classes where there catalog names only some specific varieties. Then any variety not named in the catalog can be shown as AOV. However, it still has ti be a recognizable [not necessarily recognized] variety, not a mutt. eg: your Mille Fleur Cochin could be shown in a Fair's AOV class as Mille Fleur is a recognized variety in general but not a recognized Cochin variety. An example of the converse would be a the product of a Buff Cochin crossed with a Black Cochin-I don't believe that cross would produce a recognizable variety & if not it couldn't be shown as AOV-it would be a mutt.

Black, White, Blue & Buff are recognized by the APA. Couldn't check the ABA as someone at the Bath, NY show lifted my ABA Standard out of my bag. They would be entered as Chocolate in an APA or ABA sanctioned show. Neither sanctioning body includes AOV classes. [Hopefully Walt or Vicki will confirm this]

Hi everyone! I haven't posted here in a while...I need to go out and get some more pics soon!!

I was just wondering if any one on here uses Calf Manna for their Orps, and if so do you use it at all life stages (chicks, juveniles and adults)? How much and how often do you give it to them?

I have 7, 6, and 5 month olds and today I bought a bag of calf manna just to try it out because it had some really good sounding ingredients.
Also another reason I got it is because I read somewhere a while ago that a higher protein can make the eggs bigger? not sure if that is true or not but my lavenders have been laying for 1.5 - 2 months now and still their eggs only weigh 1.4 -1.6 oz. My black english pullets have also been laying for about 2 months and their eggs are bigger but still only weigh 1.7 oz and those are the same sizes and weights as when they first started laying. I figured by now they would have at least gained a little extra size to the eggs. but maybe I am wrong maybe it takes more time...most of the pullets are laying everyday, the pullet that first started laying laid her first egg on Aug. 15th and has since laid 28 eggs but her eggs only weighs 1.4 -1.5 oz. I am just trying to figure out what is going on...I don't remember it taking this long for the eggs to get a good size with my other Orps.

All my Orps get CM every day. It is great stuff. A very good source of vitamins and minerals. About a tablespoon per bird is what mine get. I crunch it up for the small babies too.

Mine all get it too, though they don't the first couple weeks. No reason why they can't, but just don't want to go into a windy explanation as to why I don't.

Extra protein and nutrients can indeed make them lay better, but I don't know about bigger eggs. Maybe someone that knows can address that one.
