The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Little Cookie is happily clucking away with her BIG family. My final count:
6 lav orps
4 choc cuckoo orps
5 black orps (2 are from Oopsie, so who knows what genes are in there. One of Oopsie's may actually be a blue, but I can't tell while it's under Cookie.)
1 sexlink hybrid female or a pure black orp (Egg looked like it came from my Dominique, but chick looks like a purebred, so I marked it with red leg band to examine later)
2 sexlink EE females (green leg bands)
3 penciled rocks from shipped eggs

I did an egg-topsy & discovered that one of the EEs was malpositioned. It was fully formed & the yolk was completely absorbed. It internally pipped upside down & either drowned or bled. All the other eggs hatched, so overall it was a good hatch. 22/24. (The other death was caused by a clumsy roo jumping into Cookie's nestbox the day before hatching..)

Don't know how she does it, but Cookie has 21 LF chicks under her! She's a bantam..... but what a spread!

Often I'm not seeing any chicks under the back up Mama Heating Pad. They're all squeezing under Cookie. It reminds me of the Nutcracker's Lady with the big skirt. The chicks are under, on top of, or running around her.

Thankfully chickens can't count! She went broody about a week before the hatch date. I slipped 2 eggs under her on day 18. (A roo trampled one.) Cookie hatched the remaining egg, but WHAT AN EGG! I kept slipping more chicks under her as they hatched, so she must think she's Superhen by hatching 21 chicks from a single egg in less than a week!

We also hatched 15 quail. Those have a heat lamp.

I have 2 of these beautiful ladies. They are roughly 6-7 months old. I can not get them to sleep inside of their housing to save my life. All of my other hens (different varieties) go in nightly. Now, these gals are however safely put away in a covered enclosed pen that has been predator proofed but I still find the behavior odd. They sleep on the roof of the house

Does anyone here grow herbs (or vegetables)  for their chickens?

I knew I'd  grow some lettuce, then I read that several herbs ( sage, oregano, mint...) are beneficial to chicken's immune system, and should be a part of a their diet .... I'm trying to  learn more about this, so I can give my chicken the best care possible

I recently bought a book at TSC by Jessi Bloom called Free-Range Chicken Gardens..How to Create a Beautiful, Chicken-friendly Yard.. it has TONS of chicken friendly garden ideas, layouts, plants, etc.. its amazing!! Retail is 20$, i got it 50% off but even if u cant find it on sale, its one thats worth the 20$. I also fence my regular veggie garden so that the juvies can weef my aisles and then i turn the big birds out on it after harvesr and before tilling in spring.

So...hoping now that this lil bit has grown and feathered some..someone can help.. still trying to decide if its a jubilee orp or possibly a speckled Sussex i guess (only other breed i can think of with this coloring).. but here is the baby..

Do they have roost bars? I know my orps tend to favor a 2x4 laid wide side flat...they cant curl their toes around it like a normal roost, but i think with their weight it is more comfortable. I have had some not so smart birds over the years and have had to go out after dark and physically pick them up and put them on the roosts for about 4 or 5 nights until tbey catch on. Jus make sure that their roost bar is wide enough for them to be comfy ♡♡If that doesnt help.. maybe they think theyre Silkies...lol

I don't believe it is either as its got yellow legs. You'll have to wait a bit longer for it to feather out more.

Thank you♡♡ I didn't even consider skin/leg color... Ive looked thru what Meyer carries 100,829,193 times but havent figured out what any of these babies are short of the 2 EEs.. was hoping to thin them out before long but i refuse until i have their breeds 110% for sure..lol.. guess I am a closet chick hoarder
