The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I was thinking about giving Jewel away & keeping Big Blue, but then decided to keep Jewel. She makes such pretty babies and is stunning herself.

Big Blue made Jewel look small. She was even larger than Mr Wonderful. Big Blue is living the good life now in Huntley, IL.

@Faraday40 as for the chick. I'm not sure on gender. Part of me wants to say girl, but then that stance just screams more male. I will say, however, I think Mr. Wonderful is the dad. That first picture looks just like his baby picture. I think two more weeks and we will know for sure. As far as the mom...who knows? With Jewel it could be anything and I would sort of assume the same with Big Blue since she could have inherited those genes. Either way, keep a close eye with this one.

I'm secretly hoping for a big handsome blue orp - like Suede. Mr Potential is OK for now. There's really nothing wrong with him, but I'd trade up if the opportunity came along.

....Hey. Maybe my next roo should be named "Opportunity"!

I had a busy weekend with the birds. I've been letting them out to free range for a few hours and they've been enjoying themselves. I'm getting about seventeen eggs or so every two-three days from the girls that are laying. One silly Silver-laced hen is still laying her egg in the middle of the barn floor. And Odette doesn't use the box either. She generally excavates a hole out in the mud or lays directly into standing water. She just happened to lay out in the middle of the grass when they were out yesterday.

I finished wiring the front of the barn, and if I hadn't already mentioned it, had put the netting up between the pens to keep the girls where they belong. I've only had one or two fence hop, but the turkey hens hop over to pester their neighbors occasionally.

Current breeding pens are:

Breeding Pen 1 - Silver-laced Orpingtons

- Hollywood
- Mel
- Sue
- Duchess
- Victoria
- Margaret

Breeding Pen 2 - "Eye Candy" Orpingtons (Everything but the Kitchen Sink Orpingtons0

- Caspian - SLO
- Dahlia - Black Orpington
- Prudence - Chocolate Orpington
- Agatha - Blue Orpington
- Dorcas - Lavender Orpington

Breeding Pen 3 - White Orpingtons/Blue Slate Turkeys

- Derek
- Odette
- Anne

- Kuzco (no touchy)
- Yzma (the roommate calls her Janice from Mean Girls. She has a beard and during the movie someone tells Janice, "Nice wig! What's it made of?" And she replies, "Your mom's chest hair!)
- Apichu (which means sweet potato in the language spoken by the Inca civilization)

We moved all the bantams out into a big, secure (no snakes, thank you very much) cage yesterday just in time for it to be in the low 60's all day. At least they have a heat lamp.

I candled eggs last night and more are fertile than I initially thought, but the ones that are fertile don't look as developed as I would think for eggs that are 11 days out from hatching. Maybe I'm just out of the habit of candling? I didn't actually keep track as I was candling, but I think a little less than half were clear. I know I have a white egg developing (should be from Anne as it's large, pointy, and always in the box), and a few that are labeled SLO. Several BBS/C/L eggs were also developing. Now that I can tell those girls' eggs apart I can actually keep track of them moving forward.

I took some scrap wire and made a circular pen about 3 and a half feet wide and moved Suede outside yesterday evening after a big bath. Last week I gave him a bath and was blow drying him and realized he was covered in mites. I completely dried him and worked poultry dust down to the skin all over his body. Of course I immediately had to take a shower because I felt like they were all over me. When I bathed him yesterday I basically drowned him in Dawn dish soap and followed up with poultry dust. He's still eating and drinking well. He's chatty and flaps his wings. I haven't heard him crow in a couple of weeks. He still has a rattle when he breathes which annoys me to no end as he was on one antibiotic, followed by Denegard orally and in his water daily for nearly two weeks. He's also still not walking. I can't bring myself to do it, but if he doesn't get better soon I'm going to seriously consider having to put him down. It's sad because he was so gorgeous and you can tell he's trying, I just don't know what to do for him anymore.

Edited to say: Georgia is still sitting well so finger crossed for some baby geese in a couple of weeks. Sterling and Golly still have a friendly truce. They even forged a brief alliance when the male turkey wandered across the yard to talk smack at them through the fence. Golly launched the first assault and then Sterling would race under or around him to spur the fence. Georgia even came off the nest to scream and cheer them both on. It was like watching the final battle in Jurassic World with Blue and the Tyrannosaur taking on the Indominus Rex.

I debated moving Hollywood and one of the older hens into the tractor to get Sterling back into the breeding pen for a while. Caspian is gorgeous, but he's a trouble maker. He's constantly aggravating Hollywood and Derek through the fence. I had to put up some visual dividers on the fence yesterday. So in the interest of keeping myself more sane, I think I'll be finding a home for one of them after some successful hatches. I think I'll get two more out of Hollywood and then move Caspian onto the SLO pen and get a few clutches out of him. By then hopefully there are enough pullets the extra SLO can have his own flock and I can sell on of the extra males off.
