The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

She's a Diamond Jubilee (genetically Mille Fleur) Orpington. They are my most favorite color variety, of course they're only available in the UK...

If you click the picture it'll take you to a website where you can see more birds.

Since I'm new I was shocked !!! at the expense of importing birds.

What is the deal on importing eggs and the expense? It seems to be a very low percentage that hatch.

I'm with you. I LOVE that coloring!!! If only I could win the lottery

No birds yet - I am very close to moving to our new place the 1st month of the new year.
I do want breeds that are Mille Fleur, Spangled, Speckled, Spotted, Dotted - I LOVE color!

Julie, of course i recognise the birds on page 6! Unfortunately i lost the first hen last week. She won be a few Best in Shows, Reserve Best in Show and the Club Show Championship last year. She was 4 years old and just didn't make it through the moult.

As for splash cockerels, they can be very useful. As long as the blue flecks on the splash are of a good light blue, they can throw a higher percentage of good coloured birds compared to a blue to blue mating or a blue to black mating. Eye colour is something I've found very easy to fix. I imported some birds from Germany 2 years ago and one of them had an orange eye. 2 generations of breeding to dark eyed birds and about 80% of the offspring have good eye colour. So it is an easy fault to breed out with the right selection.

As for the Jubilees, i took most of the photos of those birds on that website. They are good birds for Jubilee Orpingtons, but they still have a long long way to go before they have the size and type of the standardised Orpingtons. At the moment they are quite similar Speckled Sussex, with a bit more top line and a bit more underline. There are a couple of good examples for type, but as with most Orpingtons, they don't have enough people breeding them. There are only really one couple breeding them and selecting purely for exhibition.

Hopefully I'll be able to upload some photos this evening.

Matt

I think I need to clearify what I meant by not needing a splash roo... I meant I didn't need to rush out to buy one... Since I have such lovely blues, blacks, and a Splash hen to breed my own right here that I got from Julie. I would love to have Larry Bird back

Purely by accident I have a first generation of Speckled Sussex and blue Orpington cross. One girl is very full considering the size of the mom, but is solid blue with a little bit of white. From talking with people at the Maryland show this past weekend they told me to throw in the towel on this project that it won't work. When they finish getting their feathers on their head and necks I'll post pictures.

Matt I look forward to the pics. I will try to get some pics this evening to. I have one cockerel I want you to look at.
