The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Julie, I have a question. What incubator are you using? Do you use another of the same brand to hatch, or do you use something else? I'm finally getting a pullet egg here and a pullet egg there. I'm thinking I need a dedicated hatcher and I'm wondering what other people have that is giving them good results.

Thanks,

Mary

Hey Mary, I can't speak for Julie but my DH bought me a Sportsman for Christmas and we were lucky enough to find and older GQF hatcher local. WOW does it make a difference when it comes to incubating and hatching.

The downfall... you can hatch LOTS!!

Mary, I have a cabinet incubator but since I am only setting about three doz eggs a week right now and only 3 to 6 fertile at this point I just set and candle weekly with a row for the oldest. I use a Hova bator with a turner for this and then I put them in my old Hovabator forced air to hatch setting up in styrofoam egg carton with a the bottom out of the bottom of the cup so they can have air. they don't make a mess to much and hatch well for me.

I was so blessed to have 5 live healthy baby English line orp chicks hatch last week out of 6 eggs that I had set. I have (what I believe are) 3 blues and 2 blacks. The blues are from the Splash boy of Julies and the beautiful Gwennie that I got from a breeder who also has Julies birds, and the blacks are from a black hen and black roo....also from the same breeder in Eastern Washington. I am SOOO thrilled. My bator now has 18 more eggs that I hope will give me the same great hatch rate. The pics are not the greatest but blacks and blues are hard to get good pics of, at least for me....lol...Spring is really coming even though it is rainy and cold out here in the Pacific Northwest

I love my Hova-Bators. I still use the religious (holy) bator that never was turned off since last year at this time. I cleaned once. lolol

Thought I'd share a pic of my newest propect.
Son of the late Flozelle who was killed by the coon I nabbed.

Flotilla a late Sept hatch
Freshly bathed too, still a bit damp, but you get the idea

I will be giving away 6 eggs for free to help promote one of the greatest breeders of Leghorns, Dan Honour's book on EBAY this coming week. I am starting the auction most likely Monday. EGGS will be from my young juvies who doing their job. A FREE GIFT to the Winner. And the mother of my Mottled will likely have an egg inthere somewhere. But, the cost of auction is for the cost of the book.
THOUGHTS ON BREEDING WHITE LEGHORNS by D.J.Honour 2010
Plus one other book by Dan. The Art of Breeding, also by Dan. Same deal. 6 FREE EGGS from Fid and Boss Hogg on 8 of my best young pullets. Egg collection starts Friday.
This is maybe the best Leghorn breeder of our time. He has a collection of articles in breeding that will apply to ALL breeders of ALL breeds!
Please tell your 4-H friends. I really like Dan and will do anything for this man. Many articles will date back to the early 1900's/ I am also purchasing some incredible quality Orp books. Like one by Hubbard who was the caretaker of the Famous PT Barnum of Barnum and Baily Circus. And the Black Orp eggs will be sired by my Fidrych. He won BV at Connersville. And lost to another modern day legend in breeding Doug's Buff Orps. he never had a chance. Once you ladies are ready to let go your fertile eggs i will be done giving away eggs from Fid.
Please enjoy this opportunity.
Forgot to say the REAL LiLdinkem, aka Dinkem Kitten is behind on the couch. She is the brains of my operation. lol

So how do you tell color with chicks? I have not seen enough babies to know which one will be which

Ok, you guys have me looking at Hova Bators. Although I found a used Sportsman on Craigslist (noooooo!) it's still a tad rich for my blood at $400. The sad thing is, I know that's a good deal. Joy? That sportsman is in the Roanoke craigslist. Just do a search for "incubators".

Bill, what a nice thing you're doing for your friend. I hope you get a good return for him.

And did you notice that the reserve isn't even met, yet?!

Those are insane prices/bids. That is some serious chicken addiction

Thanks. But you really need to thank Dan H. He is now putting in my hands a book I plan on sharing info, pics of birds that COOK made. Barnum's birds are the REAL DEAL. Cook created these birds within 20 years of the making of this book. He has 3 of one of these treasured books that Dan wrote and put together and 4 of the other. I asked him to sign them too. the Hubbard book he is selling me was signed by Hubbard and was presented to a Richard Harwood, a Columbian Leghorn breeder, who is also a legend.

FOURPAWS, I still LOVE YOUR GSD!
