I got stuck with 12 garbage cans since our neighborhood is one of those who are forced to use these 90 gallon cans for the auto drop system. Another brilliant idea for the "JOBS JOBS JOBS" program here in Indy that has us and Wisc, and all those other states that have decided to run away from their campaign promises.
Me being a green oriented guy had a thought along with your rubbermade idea. You can say, as they do in the UK "RUBBISHMADE" coop I now use. Some of my birds take to it like a duck takes to water. Others rather sit outside on the wet soggy ground and like tonite get soaked IF I let them. Which I don't, I shove them into these cans and shut the lid. Their good for 3 and 4 bird coops. That is usually what I have in my pens. Their definitely easy to clean, waterproof, and with the lid and a few heavy used holes works out great for most of my guys. Seeing how my backyard is getting ready to go under water, AGAIN, I think those who like it, have no problem staying warm, dry and if necessary can float with the tide. lolol

Kathy - Love the photos. You have some awesome birds !!! I love the pullet in picture #5. But my favorite pictures are the comparison pictures !!

I've never thought about using a Rubbermaid tote as a nest box. How does it work? My hubby usually builds ours. I need a couple more and he is unable to build them because of his foot surgery - he is STILL nonweight-bearing.

Kathy, the black girl in the fourth picture is just beautiful!

Joy, I could use carpentry skills like that around here, for my coop AND our home!

Thanks everyone. I bought him off of daytonfarm in November at the Frederick Show. He was such a sweetie. I don't know what happened. He hadn't been showing any signs of distress and he was in with juvie 1/2 english orps who he "mothered". I am pretty sure Carolyn told me that his brother did the same thing. Strange.

Just cut a hole in the side and set it on the floor of your coop. If you stack two with a ramp to the second one...you only have poo on the top one ;-}

I could use some carpentry skills right now too !!!

I cannot wait until the hubby is back on his feet

The nest boxes aren't that high anymore, we turned the cinderblocks over the "low" side. We were afraid the fat girls would hurt themselves getting down. And believe it or not, but 2 of those girls will squeeze into one box at a time. Crazy chickens !!
