@aart, I know the egg pictured is not the color you want but it sure is beautiful anyway. I love speckled eggs. I know there is someone on the 'buy, sell, trade' forum selling speckled hatching eggs and they are gorgeous. I admit to being tempted especially by the pink and brown speckled ones. I guess there are no guarantees of what any resulting hen would lay. How do you guarantee speckles?

I know some turkey species lay specked eggs, and my blue Marans eggs were always speckled. A hawk got her a few months after she started laying, so that may eventually have changed? Maybe there are breeds that lay consistently speckled.

I have figured out that my frizzle bantam cochins have a slight purplish tint of speckles in their eggs. Not on top of the color, but embedded in the color. Weird? Lol

I'm not that disappointed(any more) about the color<shrugs>.
More curious now too see how she goes from here on out, and the others too.

Well, I have disastrous news. I've lost 22 of my 27 chickens to several bear attacks this Thanksgiving. All that is left are 2 Isbars, 1 CCL x BCM hens, 1 EE and a BCM. This bear shredded the wooden door to the coop bending the steel hinges, ripped off the wooden cover to one of the coop windows and ripped through the wire giving her and her cub clear access to the hens. I am, needless to say, heartbroken and unsure if I can stand going through all this work again.

Yes, I have lots of hot wire but it does not cover the doors to the coops which, for the past 8 years or so have been untouched by bears. This beast was VERY determined to get in. The remaining hens have been roosting high up in the trees where I cannot get them. I can't catch them because they are out of the enclosure. I will have to get a butterfly net to try to get them back in the coop. I fear for their survival because, as we all know, bears climb very easily. We have repaired and restructured the broken doors but my goodness the bears are sooooo strong. I would never have believed that one could not only shred solid wood, but also bend the steel hinges like they were nothing.
The new plan is to run the hot wire around everything which is going to be a solid pain in my tush but it'll have to be done as it is really, the only thing that deters them.
I hate this......

Got to be a sickening feeling. Bears would decimate my entire flock too. My setup wouldn’t hold a candle to a bear.

I'm so glad South Texas doesn't have bears. Their cousins, raccoons do enough damage.
