I figured when I got chicks that I'd enjoy having them. I mean, I'm sure some folks are simply keeping birds for food purposes, and that's totally understandable.
But for me, I always knew that I wanted pets as much as I wanted the eggs. Don't get me wrong, I know that chickens are not necessarily the cuddle up on your lap type of pet, but that's okay. I get plenty of joy just from watching their antics. Although for now, mine are pretty sweet.
But even I didn't realize just how much joy they'd bring me. I had the worst day, but a couple hours of afternoon chicken watching in the shade, between my garden plants, was all the therapy I needed.
I tossed some basil into the run and watched Gilbert run to it and then make the sweetest sounds, I guess letting his girls know something good had been found. It made me chuckle, and I thought about what a good rooster I think he'll grow up to be.
Did anyone else find themselves getting more joy than they ever expected from these goofy feathered creatures that have our hearts?
Because they're cute, here are my babies, now 5 weeks old. I can't believe it!
