The Joy of Chickens

I figured when I got chicks that I'd enjoy having them. I mean, I'm sure some folks are simply keeping birds for food purposes, and that's totally understandable.

But for me, I always knew that I wanted pets as much as I wanted the eggs. Don't get me wrong, I know that chickens are not necessarily the cuddle up on your lap type of pet, but that's okay. I get plenty of joy just from watching their antics. Although for now, mine are pretty sweet.

But even I didn't realize just how much joy they'd bring me. I had the worst day, but a couple hours of afternoon chicken watching in the shade, between my garden plants, was all the therapy I needed.

I tossed some basil into the run and watched Gilbert run to it and then make the sweetest sounds, I guess letting his girls know something good had been found. It made me chuckle, and I thought about what a good rooster I think he'll grow up to be.

Did anyone else find themselves getting more joy than they ever expected from these goofy feathered creatures that have our hearts?

Because they're cute, here are my babies, now 5 weeks old. I can't believe it!

It really is incredibly soothing to just sit and watch the chickens chicken-ing around. I just sprinkle some food to attract them and let them be themselves. It's like a soap opera all from the comfort of your backyard. There's drama, friendships, frolicking... and it's especially fun with chicks or youngsters around!

Oh my goodness, how cute! :love

Yes, a lot of us talk about this every day! Some of us call it "chicken therapy." A new member the other day said she liked watching her chicken TV more than her regular channels.
Thank you so much! I believe that for sure. I'd rather watch my chicks than TV too. No ads, lol!

It really is! My babies are still so young so they're still learning to chicken. I crack up at Gilbert because I can tell he wants to be a big boy rooster so bad. But he's little and still trying to figure out how to do it. He's learned that he doesn't like helicopters, lol. We're in a rural area and there isn't a lot of air traffic, but we are in the frequent flight path of a medical helicopter, which tends to fly low and loud overhead.

Most people don't realize the potential chickens have to enrich our lives. They really are special creatures. 🥰
I agree. Even if they didn't ever provide my family with eggs, just enjoying them is reason enough to keep them.
