The Last Ivory Bill Forest

Chapter Three

A few weeks later, Cuba's government was still undecicive on what they would do.
The Ivory Bills, oblivious to the tension the people were creating, and to how close their preciouse forest was to being a sugar cane farm, continued to incubate their eggs.
They had two, two perfect eggs, amost white in color. And one was about to hatch.
The female woodpecker seemed to be aware of this, and restlessly turned her eggs. She got up, and looked at them.
Flying to a nearbye branch, she began to preen, still watching her eggs through the corner of her eye. Her beak flashed brilliantly in the noon sun.
Without wasting any time, she darted back to her hollow in the tree to sit on her eggs some more.
Meanwhile, in a different part of the forest, the male Ivory Bill was hunting for grubs.
He also knew of the upcoming hatch day, and was in a hurry to get back to the nest in the evening for his night shift.
Thumping on the trunk of a rotting tree, he peeled the bark away, revealing a few juicy bright white grubs. He picked one up on his long beak and swallowed it whole. Now, he fixed his gaze to the remaining ones, squirming in the bright sun they haven't ever felt before.
They were easy for the Ivory Bill to pick off.
Once he was done, he flew off to hunt for more.
Soon, there will be an event that would change their whole species' fate.
