The Legbar Thread!

Blackbirds, I think you've got it right. Some people on that Facebook page can be a little black and white, from what I can see. More constructive help would be better. If people expected perfection every time we'd all still be breeding jungle fowl! It's all about working with what you have towards a goal that is the SOP. I think a big gripe is with the people who sell chickens incorrectly labelled. If you do sell any hens, don't say they're cream legbars unless they are. That's an international issue that covers all breeds. I know you seem to have a lot of ameraucana - ee battles over there! I only hope other cream legbar breeders don't become as closed-minded as the ameraucana society. The snottiness would be insufferable!

If you have one bird carrying two copies of Ig and one carrying one, you'll get 50% correctly coloured birds, so as long as you have one bird that is correct, there is nothing to stop you producing 100% correct birds in a couple of years.

Everyone is so concerned with colour, but body shape and egg colour are just as important. Look what happened to the orpington over the years. It looks nothing like its original form. A shame really, because I find the original far more striking.

I breed araucanas. It would be amazing if everyone's SOP would be the same. It's incredibly frustrating seeing so many different varieties across the globe that are incompatible with ours. If I did import any birds, it'd be a few years before I could breed them to our standard.
Time-Out----

Thank you for the knowledgeable and insightful comments. Much appreciated.

Since there are multiple types of Araucanas in the UK, which do you breed? And the British Araucana Club's egg colour chart is what we are going by for those of us who have one. Is there a colour that is more desirable than others, such as A1? (i.e. does everyone try to get as close to A1 as possible, or is that just the one on the first corner of the card?) Do subsequent generations based on selection produce 'bluer' or more intense colors of eggs? Are the green eggs equally welcomed? Personally, I find the British Araucana standards more appealing than the USA standards for the breed. Too many questions? (whoops that's another one). Thanks. :O)

I don't mind saying, as I have told several other people on here where they came from...I got them on ebay from Cindylee53. She seems to run auctions pretty regularly. I do not know if she is on here or not. I posted pictures of them a while back, after they first hatched because I couldn't tell the gender of a few...which automatically raised my suspicions, I had people questions their pureness. I did email her and asked her about her breeding program. She responded that she had gotten her birds from GFF and that they were penned alone, no chance of another rooster. So I then asked her if she could help me sex a few of mine, she asked me to send pictures. I took that as a positive thing, and sent her pictures. I told her that I had other people with CL experience question them and that I was concerned about what I got. After a week, I never heard back from her. So I sent a follow up, still nothing. I have since been doing more research and have ordered eggs from Jordan Farms in hopes of getting some better birds. It is so frustrating, I guess I was too trusting. I believed that if she had spent the money to purchase the chickens from GFF that she would not cross breed them. So through this whole experience I have learned a lot, shed some tears and even had a laugh or two. It has all been a good lesson for me, but I do feel slighted. Some people on here and on other sites have been quite helpful and others not so much.

If she is on here and is lurking, I wish she would speak up and defend her birds, or at least respond to the pictures I sent her.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I will have at least one of those that will be a keeper.
I think your chickens are really cute! They have very fluffy feathers. I am sorry they aren't what you were looking for. CindyLee had a lot of auctions on Ebay for Legbar eggs. I thought about ordering from her too. I wonder how many people have nonconforming or mixed breed Legbars now from her stock. You should be good with Jordan Farms eggs. I bought my stock from him and I have some very nice cream legbars. He took a lot of care when shipping the live birds and even called me when they arrived at my post office.

Good luck with your next hatch!

I really wish I would have found this thread before I even spent money on her auctions. :( Oh well, life goes on. If anything I will have a few more boys in the freezer and some pretty egg layers in my laying flock.

I will keep an eye on the few that people have mentioned that might have some potential. They are only 6 weeks old, so time will tell. I have to laugh every morning though, because one of those young boys is already starting to crow. They are in a grow out pen where they can see my other chickens, but are safe from them. Well when my BLRW cockeral starts in with his morning crowing, that little guy screeches back at him. This morning he was so loud I could hear him in my house. Soup, my BLRW, just responds back and it is like they do this dueling crowing thing for about 5 minutes. I think the little guy gets tired and he finally shuts up. Just cracks me up. These are the simple things about raising chickens that bring a smile to my face. In the big scheme of things, this is what makes life good. :)

I ordered the eggs from Jordan Farm, but have yet to hear when they will ship, I will keep you all posted as to what I end up.

Woo hoo! Found a Cream Legbar egg today. Haven't seen one of those in over 3 weeks. Of course it was from one of my pullets and not my laying hens. Slackers.

Congrats on the new layer madamwolf tell those other ladies to get off their duffs!
I have 1 new female legbar that hatched from eggs that my broody Ameraucana was sitting on. I took her away while she was pipping as the last chick that hatched did not survive - looked like she squashed it. I'm gonna have to find her a playmate I think. She's from my older layer so we'll see what she looks like as she grows. Wasn't expecting it to hatch so it's kinda nice it made it. My second girls eggs are still a bit smaller than the other but the color is nice waiting to see if they get bigger. It'll be a while before anyone else starts laying - my next oldest is a 12 week old Jubilee...tick tock tick tock

madamwlf, how long before one of your whites should start laying? I am dying to know what color the eggs are.
They are only 8 weeks old. So it probably won't be until next year. They might not start laying until sometime in the spring. I'm hoping sometime in the winter but my adult layers didn't start until the spring.
