The Legbar Thread!

People keep asking me how the Cream Legbar eggs compare with Easter Eggers, Araucanas, and Ameraucanas. I have yet to see any side-by-side comparisons. Can anyone comment on differences? Production rates, color, size, shell thickness, etc. I have seen 2 or 3 comments on the topic, but don't feel like I can really draw any conclusions yet.
We have Ameraucana, and compared to YOUR CL eggs they are quite close to the same shade. Actually I felt that the Ameraucana eggs were very slightly darker blue. Wish I'd thought to take a side-by-side picture before I hatched them out. My understanding is the shade has some variance depending on your exact downlines with all of these blue layers. As for production rates when we got them in June we were getting probably 5 eggs/week from each Ameraucana hen, the heat stopped them completely, and only in the last 2 or 3 days have they begun to both lay consistently nearly every day. Size is also about the same, I'd call it a medium although I don't have an egg scale. I didn't notice a difference in shell thickness on hatch day.

I just have to take a minute and thank everyone on here for the PM's, well wishes and offers. You all rock!

I also want to let you all know that after talking with Richard of Jordan Farm tonight we decided the best option for me at this point is for him to send me some live birds. I just have to tell you all that every communication with him has been nothing but top notch. I spent quite a bit of time talking birds with him, he is friendly, professional and very knowledgeable. I would highly recommend Jordan Farm.

I am really looking forward to them coming next week. :)

My Cream Legbar hatches have been
2 males out of 11 eggs on the first batch
3 females out of 8 eggs on second.
0 out of 6 on the third.

Turkey eggs have even been worse
0/6
1/12
1/8
1/6

I have Isbars, Lemon Cuckoo Orpingtons and Cream Legbars that I got from Richard and they are gorgeous birds! Also have 9 eggs setting now from him....I see veining (I think) in all but one after 3 days....this is my first time incubating eggs so I am a rookie on how things are supposed to look etc.....but have been studying hard...so hopefully will have a fairly good hatch. He is very nice and helpful and always throws in an extra or 2.

Sounds like you are on the way to a great hatch. You are right, he threw in extras with my order too. can't wait to hear what you hatch out...what kind of eggs?

I went to bed smiling last night, thinking about the birds coming from Jordan Farm and from the very generous and helpful madamwlf.

I am still amazed at the kindness and generosity so many people on here have. Perhaps BYC folks are just a nicer breed of folks.

So anyway...this is what I am doing today...

The happy dance!!!

Interesting tail on that cream legbar female in front. Mostly the barring is very light and not pronounced like that. Doesn't Melow look appealing there? No wonder you got her.
I know im quite happy about not getting her although if she was nice i wouldn't mind, i remember when Melow pecked my finger through the cage of the pet shop, then killed a bee!, my friend was going to get me the blue bell behind her but she thaught it looked like a man :/

Thanks for the additional information on the egg comparison with the other blue egg producers.

I still look foreword to side by side comparisons, and for the opportunity to compete against EE's & Americaunas in the colored egg category of the Blue Bonnet Egg festival next summer. :)

I have EE that will be 1-year when my cream legbar is 9-months. CL's eggs though smaller have more intense color and richer color - also bluer. I will post when I can photo eggs side-by-side, but my EE is definitely a mint green..

I have heard that intense heat fades egg colors...anyone else? So in a few weeks the colors may be more vibrant for both hens.

My EE eggs are on the bluer side. The Cream Legbar eggs are smaller and a similar color but more intense. I find it difficult to capture the accurate colors with my digital camera.

The boys are now 13 days old and I've just changed their bands for the first time. Pitt is now wearing orange, Depp is still in the green ( a different shade) and Clooney in Blue. Pitt is larger and heavier than the other two boys right now. It'll be interesting to see if this changes and the others catch up.
