The Legbar Thread!

It would be really neat to have a registry. It sounds like a lot of work though. I don't think that we would get a lot of peole to put the time into a registry. Farm records are propablly still the best way to go. If you put up a page other could track the same information to make our farm records more unitform. (i.e. Weeks to first egg, egg weight, annual production, etc. are things others might track).

I usually don't candle until day 18, so yes clear eggs are eggs that never started. Either from not being fertile or the embryo dying during shipping or other egg handling prior to incubation. Yes, the red ring are the early quitters and yes the developed embryos that die later on are the late quitters.
Thanks GaryDean....
Since I see we can make tables in member pages.... I will give it a shot and see if the columns and rows make sense. A table where others could replicate the page...may be possible, then it would just be fill-in-the-blanks for the ones who want to share records about - age at first egg, weight etc. Any other things anyone else wants to see tracked on each bird or family of birds...drop your ideas off here.

I'm confused. This one hatched today, a first for me. I don't know the gender. Per the GFF website, "Male chicks had a white spot behind their heads and female chicks had well-defined “chipmunk” stripes in the down on their backs." This chick has both the white spot and the well defined chipmonk stripes. So is it a boy or a girl? I'm inclined to say girl. What do you guys think?

Pullet. I don't have much CL experience but on my Barred Rocks it is fairly common for the pullets to have a white spot on the head. The pullet's white spot has more distinct edges and/or is small, whereas the cockerels are more diffuse and larger. I'm betting its the same with the CL. Maybe.

My one that was like that looked very female within a few days. Because it has very distinct striping I would say female. I have heard though that these are not as good for breeding from- you could possibly lose the autosexing trait. IMO it's worth hanging on to her and RECORDING carefully so you can test hatch. THEN if this is a problem with her chicks I would cull her.

I didn't even think about future breeding issues. I will keep this one marked to track her progress. Thanks!

That's right! Thanks! I'm going with pullet.

Quote: laugh but I have been thinking of a egg card and a feather card a comb card and foot card etc. That we all say what colors we want. We are here, we are the first breeders. We need to be the ones to set the standards that we will presen,t as we lobby our breed to be acccepted by the apa ie its time to start the Crested Cream Legbar Club. just my thoughts.

Drove thru Valdosta today going home from Florida and all I could think about was that Richard Jordan's farm was there and I wanted to stop soooooo bad but DH wouldn't do it because he knew I wouldn't leave empty handed! Bummer!

MY husband would know better than to refuse to stop there for me . tell dh we are ashamed of him bad hubby

LOL I would have been the one begging hubby NOT to stop- but we would have stopped anyway and probably come home with as many as we could squeeze in, hm I wonder if we could leave a kid in exchange? We would still have 3 others!

Just hatched out my first batch of CL bator babies from our trio. All five eggs hatched - 2 boys and 3 girls. Three females on the top of the photo, male to the bottom. The lighter chick toward the far left is a different breed. Chipmunk stripes and eyeliner are quite well defined on the girls. The boy is a more muted "chipmunk" without eyeliner or defined lines. His head is a light gold color with a tiny bit of white, but not a big bright white spot.
