The Legbar Thread!

I just had an awesome hatch, went to bed last night with two chicks hatched and four pipped. Woke up this morning to six chicks! All eggs that went into lockdown hatched. One of my best hatches in a while! I ended up with 5 boys and 1 girl, not the greatest odds, but I'll take that one girl! I am keeping one boy to add to my flock, as backup, but DH wants me to find homes for the rest of the boys. So if anyone is looking for any legbar boys I've got 4, LOL!

And here is a quick pic of the group, not the greatest but you can see the little girl in the middle. I lost my camera charger and had to make due with my phone for the pic. I'll try to get some better pics later as they settle in the brooder. I am really liking one of the really light boys.

keep track of the boys and document their growth(with pics)

Yay! Let me know if they all arrive intact or not. Ran out of the foam tubes I like to use so some are in foam and some are in bubble wrap... 10 total.
They are here! I checked them over and they all look good. I like the foam tubes. If I ever ship eggs I will remember those. They are resting at room temp overnight and then into the bator tomorrow. I can see that they came from multiple hens. Some are a very light blue. Can't wait to see how they turn out.

I had a Legbar hen go broody 3+ weeks ago and let her sit on some of the eggs. She is an excellent momma. They are 4-5 days old today! Parents all directly from GFF last March. Interesting that two of the three males are so much lighter in color than the other one. My roosters all have too much copper color on their wings. Glad to see these lighter ones pop out.

What pretty chicks!!! My CL last year that brooded chicks was also an excellent mother. She spent 100% of the time teaching her chicks. Have a CL broody right now--- hope she is as good a mom as her mother was. I love that they will go broody. Moves us closer to those heritage-style chickens.

Yay! Phew! Now we cross our fingers for a good hatch...

Yeah LOVE using the tubes. Got the idea from TheSheriff. SO much better than bubble wrap. My bubble wrapped orders half the time are busted or scrambled it seems. I found a place online to order them for half the price as from Lowe's, and Lowe's has to special order this size. The only catch is you have to order $50 to get free shipping, which is about a case worth. They came today of course... Let me know if you want their info later.

i have a CCL broody right now as well, in addition to THREE other broodies (a basque, a SPPR, and an australorp) -- just had to move the CL to a different nesting box last night, as the main nesting area only accommodates three, and thankfully she's settled into her new spot without too much fuss... can't wait to see how she is with the babies!

Hi everyone,

I'm going to pick up 3 CL chicks this weekend for suburban backyard layers. As I'm building their coop, I have a question - how loud are the adult hens? Are they big "talkers" or about the same as other hens?

If they are particularly "noisy", I'll build the coop walls thicker/insulated and maybe put in an automatic door. Just trying to be prepared and be considerate of the neighbors.

My girls like to cluck and sing when we're around, but otherwise they're very quiet.
