The Legbar Thread!

Do you think this was introduced from the Araucana or the Leghorn, or some where else? What's is your take on the spurs, good, bad or indifferent?

My guess is that the lady-spurs are from Leghorns. I don't think that they are bad, but feel the lines without them look more refined.

Odd question...one of the Silkie eggs was empty today (hatched) but all of the chicks looked like normal autosexing legbar chicks! I guess we need to wait a few days to see who the mystery Barkie is! I hope it's not the one boy who didn't make it. I'm not sure why he died, but he only lived a few hours after hatching. There is one possible Barkie egg left and it pipped this evening, so maybe we'll have a mystery chick tomorrow!
I know lots of people swear by using Broodies, but this lack of control is driving me a bit insane...I'm used to checking on the chicks often, applying emergency procedures to weak ones, even helping them hatch! At least Lucy is doing a good job keeping them warm

Can you tell if the number of empty shells matches the number of chicks? I've got a few Barkie chicks (I think I do; can't swear to the parentage) but am also unfortunately familiar with the vagueries of broodies.

Yes shell # equals chicks...looks like there are 8 left and another hatching! The other Silkie egg hatched, so I'll have to be paying attention to any differences. It looks like one chick might have a shorter beak than the others, but we'll see. Same beak and leg color...same skin color...but a couple of the chipmunk stripes are a bit uneven maybe that's them!

I'd love to see pictures! I have some CL x Polish that are pretty cool. . . Silkie, hmm. I'll have to take another look at my Silkie crosses . . . .

Count toes. The one with 5 toes on each foot is the CLB X Silkie.

The CLB x Silkie should get in slate colored legs in a few weeks too so you will also be able to tell by legcolor. I would also watch the comb. The one that developes the walnut comb is going to be your "barkie".

Oh...look for feathers on the shanks too when you are counting toes. The feathers should be visible on the shanks at hatch on the CLB x Silkie.

Oddly enough two of my flock eggs hatched tiny chicks with everything black: Silkie feathers, 5-toed feathered feet, beak, comb, all black -- and the combs are straight. I'm wondering if that came from their hatchery-Silkie parent(s) which are all walnut-combed, as I see no trace of barring or other CL traits.
