The Legbar Thread!

While it has the chipmunk stripes, that is a pretty strong white dot, I hatched out one similar (white spot slightly larger and colors less intense on "striping") and I deemed it a roo.....sadly, it passed a few days later, had a major hernia at hatch, but really wanted a roo of this breed.

Hi SueG3442-

My guess is three girls in front and 3 boys in back ... Check the back of the one you aren't certain of - and if you have distinct chipmunk stripes it's probably a girl. Diffused stripes could be a bit confusing -- and a tiny white head spot with a few hairs -- but chipmunk stripes girl....and big white blotch on the head a boy.... HTH

Congratulations on your success with the hatch.

I really want to get one of my males in with one of my original crested hens. So i got some free pallets, straw and used the old wood from my old goat pen to make a new breeding pen.

I like this Tri Flex its really strong, smooth and water proof. I should be able to wipe it down pretty nice if it gets dirty.

the final product with a view to go with it. well almost final, i couldn't get the side skirting down. I ran out of day.

Hi, Everybody.
I'm new, mostly lurking and searching since I have limited computer access. I'm a first-time chicken mom, and among my 8 pullets are 3 Cream Legbars.
Quick question--My 20-week old CL has been laying for 2 weeks. We've gotten 12 normal eggs with a soft-shelled egg in the middle. I was anticipating the eggs would get larger after the fifth or sixth one. All twelve of the eggs have been small.
They're perfect and beautiful eggs, but I was expecting at least a medium or large egg. Do cream legbars only lay small eggs?

Welcome to chicken ownership!

Although I cant tell you specifics on CL pullets, I can tell you what is normal in general.

The first efforts of a pullet are generally off as the factory is just starting to gear up. A few shell-less eggs are not uncommon and they can be atypically shaped, too. The younger a pullet lays, the smaller the initial effort is. I actually thing that the eggs will stay a bit smaller than the ones that lay a little later, IMO.

That being said, pullet's eggs are smaller than the final egg they will lay as a hen. They will typically go up a size at least when they mature. I do know there are differences in lines where some lay larger or smaller eggs. I have received several dozen CL shipped eggs, and the pullet eggs (labeled as such) were all small whereas the 'regular' eggs were medium to large with one extra-large.

Wow you had some early layers! Soft shell is a sign of not enough calcium, but sometimes it can just be an oddity too. Do your hens have access to calcium? Cream Legbars should lay a large egg at maturity, but there are many sizes out there. When I ordered hatching eggs this spring I received eggs varying in size from medium to XL! I think my girls took a month or two before they moved up from 40g to 55g+. Have you weighed your eggs? Size is actually based on weight and not circumference or length.
