The Legbar Thread!

wow they look cool i wonder what a hen would look like when i cross a cochin with a polish it didn't have a very big crest at all.
Except for one, all my chicks have crests except one. Not surprising, though, as the other possible roosters are Silkies, and a remote chance of Light Sussex.

Here are a couple more half-Cream-Legbar chicks:

Profile shot. I think he's Cream Legbar x Coronation Sussex:

Look at that Cream Legbar-ish tail:

And barred hackles:

And this Cream Legbar x ? pullet:

I'm guessing this is Mom:

Same hen, when she was younger:

We call this one Mr. Beautiful. His whole body shines in the sun.
Of course, he stood in the shade for his picture!
Not sure on the mother.

I have a (hatchery) Buff-Laced Polish. Is that the same as gold-laced?
Here she is:

She has a skinnier body than your gorgeous Red Polish hen.

Tried to get a pic of the rose comb and single comb roosters together for comparison and this is the best I got...

Aloha kakou,

E Mike, so is the rose comb a combination of the pea comb and the single comb? The pea comb comes from the araucana? I thought Punnet guys bread the pea comb out, showing that linked genes can be separated, since the pea comb is linked to the blue egg. Holla back!

The rose comb is different from the pea and single comb. It is dominant like a pea comb. If you were to cross pea and rose combs, you would end up with walnut looking comb. The pea comb was bred out and it is closely linked to blue egg gene but not to rose comb. The rose comb is great when it comes to not getting frost bite, plus it looks more neat than a single comb on some birds.
The rose comb in my project came from a rose comb light brown leghorn. I used the leghorn because it was a part of the legbar so I figured that adding in something that was already there wouldn't mess it up too bad, plus the egg color was cleaned up (not green but nice clear blue), egg production was increased, the pattern (minus barring) is the same, also adding in unrelated birds really helped to give a boost of genetic diversity.

The rose comb rooster is 1/4 leghorn, 3/4 legbar. The single combed rooster in the pic has the same father, just a pure legbar mother. Color and type wise, they are near identical which is what I love

oK FINALLY AFTER TRYING ALL SUMMER i GOT A DECENT HATCH ON THE LEGBARs. Sorry didn't realize
the cap was on.
Anyway 7 chicks hatched out of 14 eggs. 1 a day early 5 on due date and 1 slow poke 2 days late. I found when I was going to do a eggtopsy..
Eggtopsy of the last eggs was 2 early quitters and 5 clears.
Anyway I think I got 4 girls and 3 boys. Not sure about slow poke. What do you think?

Anyway this is Pokey. girl or boy
