The Legbar Thread!

Let me put it this way.. I have no idea where or how her birds picked this up. But if one day my birds had some pocket of infection under the eyelid what should I do? Because our vets don't know anything about chickens. Do you suppose the VetRx really helped or did it just run its course? I completely recognize this cant be diagnosed here. But what would you suspect? Where would you start? Personally I'd have to cull first and ask questions later if there was no quick solution.

Hi everyone,
One of my Isbar roosters injured one of his eyes a few months back. I thought he'd lost that eye, and it got infected. I put triple antibiotic ointment on his eye daily, and after a few days it looked much better. I did that for about 10 days, even though it looked better. His eye is fine and he seems to see just fine out of it. Best of luck, and I hope it's better soon.

This Fall, I have had two different cockerels and a pullet who had an eye issue. The issue was characterized by dried fluid that crusted the eye lid shut. I used a warm wet wash cloth to gradually soften and then ease the eye lid open. Usually there appeared to be some discolored fluid once the eye lid was open.

To treat these birds, I provide some oxytetracyline and sulfa drugs in the water and some ophthalmic erythomycin ointment or a drop of tobradex (ophthalmic antibiotic & steroid). The later two were some left overs I had from previous issues for which I had been treated. All three of these chickens' eyes cleared up within 1-2 days.

It is possible to get vet help, remotely....I just recalled that when my chicken had eye worm, I went to vets on line. They used to advertise even here on byc, I think. I was put in touch with a poultry vet in Ireland. She suggested saline solution. I did some saline washes before I got hold of VetRx, and then used vetRx, and subsequently, OxyRid from the Philippines.

It sounds like others: TheTropix, and HaplessRunner have found successful treatments for eye problems. You can also get a callback from Peter Brown "the chicken doctor".

hopefully you don't face eye problems, but if you do, I would suspect that it would be worth putting in effort to treat.

Yes I hope not too! Thanks. Good ideas.

A couple of drops of Tylan 50 in the eye for 3 days should show improvement. You could also give Tylan 50 shots for 3 days. I wouldn't do it at the same time. If warranted, a follow up of antibiotics in the water.
