The Legbar Thread!

I grab a chicken and both of us step on a scale. Then I subtract my weight. But for some reason, the chickens keep weighing like 200 lbs.

I will have to give it a try

I have a 5 gallon bucket. I put the hens in the bucket and cover with a lid it need to keep them from hopping out. then I put the bucket and lead on the scale and subtract out the difference. I haven't got any 200# birds, but the scale only goes up to 15 lbs, so maybe that is my problem. :)

Big is beautiful. No skinny chickens at my farm. :)

I like the smaller size chickens that lay big eggs. After having Orpington and Marans, the Legbars seem very economical to feed!

I have been concentration on capturing cream! I think I have it! So now straight combs, nice tails and size can come next.

She is nice but looks gold in the hackle. Are you breeding with cream or the more gold tone color in mind? I'd love to have slightly bigger birds but 7+ is a bit bigger than I'd like. DCchickens would love her size. She's a bit too gold for me but I want wider tails on my girls. It always is something.

I prefer the more light brown looking birds. I'll always keep a couple cream birds in the flock just to keep it going but they are too pale for my taste.
She is the largest hen I have, her son is about the same size. The other legbars are about the right weight but I like the massive size she has. Some day I'll get a pic of her with a normal sized hen to show the difference. We use a postal scale to weigh our chickens. Normally just set them on their backs on the scale while holding the legs, once they settle down, let the legs rest some and get the weight.

i'll 'weigh in' on this...

I use a basic aluminum handled fish net and a 'fish hook' scale that will go up to 45 pounds. the scale is a hanging scale I got off ebay for about $5, the net came from the fishing department at walmart for about the same.

put the bird in the net, hang the net from the scale. subtract the weight of the net. you could tare the net first so it's weight isn't counted, but easier said than done when you're weighing multiple birds from multiple pens. the scale auto shuts off after about 30 seconds. it'll do pounds ounces or kilos.

Just a quick question for everyone- my original legbars all were vaccinated for the basic mareks but they all have at least 1 bad eye that looks like that form of mareks. It seems thar probably 3/4 of their offspring have the same thing. Anyone else have this? It doesn't ever effect them like mareks, just ruins their eyes and it seems like it is only the legbars that have it.

I had a legbar that I joked needed glasses because she kept missing the meal worm treats I held out - but she was eaten by a raccoon at about 9 weeks or so.

That is so sad!

@M are your birds getting the grey blind eye thing? I remember seeing posts about a bird on the Legbar threads that experienced it, but it didn't end up being Mareks.

Does anyone know anything about GFF's "D" line?

Hi! I just got 3 Jill Rees (1 roo/2 girls) and 5 Line D (1 roo/4 girls) from GFF. They're only 2.5 weeks now, and the D's seem a bit larger than the Rees'. The D girls are traditional chipmunk color, the roo is a bit darker w/ stronger barring than the Rees roo. Roos and girls all hv beginnings of crests. All the chicks were in great shape on arrival and hv been vibrant and healthy. Here's a pic of the Rees roo (left) and Line D roo (right).
