The Legbar Thread!

That is interesting -- are the ones that start at different times from different parent stock? Just curious.

When we think about it, it is more likely that there is going to be variation.

Here's a funny story -- we did an Artificial Insemination (AI that doesn't mean Avian Influenza) project on our registered cattle about 10-years ago. Every cow and heifer was inseminated the same day -- that had come into heat in the previous hours -- and we were kind of naive and thought that subsequently they would all calve on exactly the same day. Like one day -- there would be 15 newborn calves - then the next day there are 10-more --- or however many cows we had inseminated in each session according to the gestation period of the cows. -- They spread out the calving over a couple of weeks. That's mother nature for you.

Animals don't read the books!

The chart in the link that @blackbirds13 provided is the full color chart, it has 12 pages with all the colors in the "rainbow", blue and green included. It is the same chart that many of us use when referring to color.

Thanks! I'll look into it!

I purchased the last one that Etsy had. Sorry!

Hi Stryker! Just this evening I was cracking eggs for dinner and one egg had a blue interior and two were very pale--I am sure the membranes were opaque on the ones that looked white. If you run the eggs under water and very gently strip the membranes then rub more to get the remainder off you will see what they look like on the inside of the shell. I have a picture I did last year of three eggshells with the membranes stripped--a cream legbar, a welsummer and my EE who lays a pinkish/tinted egg:

Conventional wisdom says that the brown only appears on the outside coating but clearly in my EE her pale tannish pink is all throughout the shell.
I read somewhere that pink color is not a different shade of brown and comes from a pigment in the plum and has been known to permeate the egg shell. The thicker the plum, the darker the pink and if it's on top of dark brown eggs, it may occasionally result in purple/mauve colored eggs like in Croad's Langshans.

The only references I have are to this article:

Thought that this may be of interest to some Legbar raisers -- I just entered the 9-week weights for my chicks -- and then wondered what our spreadsheet average was for chick weight at 9 weeks -- and it is 1.55 pounds.

There are only 19 chicks who have weight entered at 9 - weeks -- so thanks to those of you who are helping us gather stats~

There are two heavy weights in the 19 entered for that age group - both male and both were over 2# at the 9-week mark.

I really need to get me a scale. I would love to help with the weights also.

I officially started collecting CL eggs and storing them to set for next week, both from my CL flock and my Rees line flock. This will be my first hatch of the year, Im excited for them.

I have 7 eggs collected as of this morn

Thanks! One needn't collect weight on every single chick that ever hatched...but to trace the growth of a select few chicks for a long time is a great help - as our database of weights by age grows - the info becomes of more value IMO.

Hoo ray for Spring!! what is the longest that you hold them before incubating? Hope that your hatches are astronomically good.

I generally store them for about 5-7 days to assure I set fresh eggs. The longest I have held them I think is 12 days with still very good results. This time I will be storing for 12days also and set early next Sat the 14th.
