The Legbar Thread!

I would not be too rough on the postal service. Without them there's Fed-EX and UPS and over the years I've known folks who work there and the horror stories I have heard of what happens to packages there...and intentionally so .... I'll take the US postal service any day - I've had mostly good experiences but I do live in a small small small town where the office closes for lunch every day.

Good points. And of the decades of mail service I've had, mistakes by the post office have been extremely rare. Mangled mail or dinged boxes almost always came bagged and with a note attached.

I do have to say that of three sets of eggs I've received, two were not held at the post office despite large labels with that notice and my phone number on the box; the third was at the post office only because I arrived before they opened and they hadn't yet put it on the truck.

Which makes me wonder if marking FRAGILE on the box makes any difference in handling.

They always bring mine to the house no matter what's written on the box. The only calls i get are for the live chicks. I wonder if i made a specific request prior to the arrival of the eggs so they know to hold them back for pickup. Maybe the paperwork for the live chicks allows for them to be able to see the notice where as the eggs are really just part of the general mail even if they are priority. Maybe the phone call thing is a bit too much extra work for the distribution centers?
I think I may ask at the post office next time how this works. I'm curious.

Snow snow snow...and more snow but not too much on the ground yet. Hubby has the generator and the plow at the ready. It sure is starting to look really beautiful out there. Wish he did not have to go into work today.

I posted some pics in the Cream Legbar thread - I am having trouble keeping up with 2 separate threads, about the same breed. Anyone think we could use one of the threads and maybe let the other drift off?
Probably that would/could reduce confusion. Part of it depends on how you access your BYC. If you click on the brown 'profile' tab in the upper right, it will list all the recent threads you have posted in, and highlight the ones with new messages and then take you directly there, to the one(s) you haven't yet read.

One thing that gets frustrating too---is when a thread gets really long and you want to reference back...you need to go through the whole thread. Since there are a couple of Cream Legbar threads---referencing back becomes a challenge.

How many eggs do Cream Legbars usually lay a week?
In the UK, they were trying to achieve 180/yr. That seemed a bit low to me...but some of the breeders there weren't going for production. New to the USA, and we are just starting to find these things out. Also I think different lines have a difference in performance. Stay tuned....

Because i thaught Melow was a great layer but she wasnt a pure Cream Legbar so she probablies was a better layer than a pure one...

Quote: I agree about referencing being a challenge. I try to bookmark the posts that I know I'll want to see again but even that has become a mile long.. Having more than one thread makes it even more difficult. It might be helpful if we could compile the most relevent information into one source.. aka write a book.

Quote: I agree. My oldest girl (golden hackle) lays a giant egg and i do mean so HUGE they just barely fit into the egg carton. My cream girl from the second line lays a bluer egg but smaller. Hers started off smaller but have gotten bigger but still not the size of girl one and that girl lays like a champ. My third and youngest, daughter of the oldest still lays a smaller egg. I think she will quit laying soon like the second girl did and then come back on line with a size change like happened with number 2. I get an egg from the oldest hen almost every day and almost non-stop. If I can get her offspring to lighten up colorwise but keep the egg production I'd be so happy. My three younger cream girls are over 20 weeks but...sadly not ready to come on line yet.
From what I've read they were not meant to be as much a production bird as much as a blue laying auto-sexing breed and 190 was a number i thought i saw as typical.
I'm interested in the Ayam Cemani and they lay about 80 a year so for me making the CLs more of an egg production bird is not a great focus but just hoping to maintain what I am getting. I'm happy with my numbers. I do not count yet, but with only 3 old enough to lay I am guaranteed at least 2 eggs daily with 3 quite frequently.
