1. Females do have spot, small spots. males are larger and uneven
2. stripe on the back sometimes is lacking altogether(see chickcat male)

these chicks are really dark, even darker than the photo's show.

what tells me the chick in question is a Female is the well defined headstripe. males have a messy head pattern...

so 90% this is a Female.

Dark males even the ones with back stripes lack a well defined headstripe

Hi Everyone. I have gotten fascinated with this breed of chicken and have decided to get some. I am located in Indiana, is there anybody reasonably close that would have any available? Willing to buy hatching eggs, chicks, or young adults. I would prefer to be able to pick them up, but would ship if I had to.

The information on this thread (and on the site in general) is amazing, even a bit overwhelming. My mom says that she is jealous, because there was nowhere to go for this type of info back when she was raising chickens for the first time!

Good for you. You will Love your cream Legbars. Ohio has a Cream Legbar Club Regional Director--- and that may be close enough to you to get chicks, eggs or who knows.

back stripes and dark black eye-liner = girl

big white head blotch = boy --

Sadly, I divested of those chicks in the photo above.

I think perhaps the dark-black girl grew up to look a LOT like her mother Robin. -- One may not be able to keep all one's hatchlings, especially when one is moving. sorry -- I will keep better track going forward.

ETA mother's hackles are in the photo with chicks.

Now--- I'm wondering about not the CREAM but the other part of the barring. Seems like UK birds have a light-gray color in the barring....but most USA birds have a darker - darker gray in the barring. Anyone else see it that way?

BTW also, I knew exactly which hen and rooster paired for all my chicks -- and had some of the medium light - the more silvery gray males and those 4 very dark downed chicks all from the same hen and rooster.

Here's the best of my projection -- the down color seemed to have little to no influence on the adult colors--- but I can't verify with 100% accuracy.

ETA, while i'm throwing things out there.... the color referred to as 'slate' is what pioneer kids took to school to write on -- it evolved into the "black board" -- really. So a medium gray may not be slate. JMO.

Where in Indiana are you looking? I'm in NW Indiana and have some chicks hatching HOPEFULLY in another week.. Also will have some hatching eggs mid May so far my eggs have been 100% fertile.

True Cream Legbars have 2 does of the cream gene as far as im aware

here are a few of my chicks

a very light colour boy Note the eye band (but is a boy) the wing feathers are barred cream


A slightly darker boy with a eye bar and spot (cream wing feathers)


A fairly dark boy with eye bar and spot


a dark girl defined stripe no spot and brown clearly distinguishable wing feathers


A light Girls same features as above




one of the main distinctions of a boy is the blended and not so defined chipmunk

a little can show through as well as little eye bar and only a small spot

Its still a boy
