The Legbar Thread!

Breeds used in the creation of the Cream Legbar

1) Plymouth Rock
2) English Light Brown Leghorn
3) Danish Light Brown leghorn
4) Chilean Hen (mixed bird that was yellow in color, crested, and carried one copy of the blue egg gene)
5) Gold Penciled Hamburg
6) Buff Leghorn
7) White Leghorn

Am I missing anything?

What are Legbars bred from? Like, what breeds are/were used to make them?
Thanks,
Hi Mitchell---

Back when R.C. Punnett and Michael Pease developed Cream Legbars they used Barred Plymouth Rocks to gain autosexing capabilities and a brown Leghorn to gain high egg production. Then to the mix they added a "Chilean Hen" - which put in the blue-egg genetics and the crests.... Today the Chilean birds are considered descendants of the Araucana Indian's birds in Chile...the hen was brought to England in the 1930's. Although a little uncertain, I think, -- the cream genetics came from the Chilean hen, or possibly from some of the birds that Pease was working with -- both men were associated with Cambridge University at the time. Correct me if I got some of this wrong - thanks y'all.

How funny I clicked Reply before I read the other post..... Someday we will have the history on the Cream Legbar Club's website. Wish we could get Punnett's notes from -- is it David Applegarth who took over his flock in 1957?? Wouldn't that be something??

Thanks guys, very helpful. So can you create your own legbars?

There is one person who has been working on that route for several years, even before Greenfire Farms imported their birds: April Howington in Texas. I know she is getting close.

The problem with recreating Cream Legbars is the wildcard- the "Chilean Hen" of which we cannot be absolutely sure of the genetic make-up. Curtis Hale has been doing a lot of research and documentation of the creation of Cream Legbars and hopefully soon will be ready to share his work.
