Now that we can posts pics again, I would like to ask a question that's been on my mind since yesterday.

Blackbirds13, when you mentioned smudges on your rooster's shoulders, can you elaborate a bit? I'm new to this breed and still learning about good vs bad in their appearance. I do not intend to show, but I do intend to eventually breed myself some more (possibly also to sell) and I do want to make sure that they look how they should.

My oldest roo is only 15 weeks, so still growing. These pics are about a week old. Is the coloring that I see on his shoulders what you mean when you mention smudges?

I had a proud moment today with my legbar project. I was out watching them move and just be chickens when I noticed my top 4 legbar cockerels in a gang. There were 2 rose comb and 2 single comb birds and they have always caught my eye. Well, the moment came when they stopped and looked at me. I realized that all 4 are identical in almost every way but the comb. The 2 single comb cockerels are from my Line A rooster on line C hen and the rose comb birds are 3/4 Line A 1/4 leghorn.

When I finally get a chance and have a helper, I will try to corral them to get some pics. I'll try to snag a couple of the sale birds too since some of you were interested in what they look like.

Another thing I have noticed is that most of the larger crested pullets have the lacing in the body that I mentioned before, still not sure what is causing it but I'm not a fan so they will be sold on

Yes that is the chestnut/red coloring I was alluding to. Since all of my chicks are really young having it show up now on the one boy means he will be more colorful than I'd prefer as an adult. The other 3 are still clear of it and when I look at incoming saddle feathers his was also darker and more evident than any of the other 3. This color is a different gene than the one that affects the saddle and hackle color, but generally can give you a good indication on how colorful the bird may turn out. Your boy seems nice and stocky but has a lot of color coming out in all three areas. In the UK the boys they prefer have very little gold or chestnut color anywhere to include the shoulders. Chestnut shoulders is listed as "some permissible' in the British SOP so not having any is preferable on that side of the pond. Here in the US I have yet to see a rooster with no color but some do have minimal shoulder color. Your girl is nice also and appears to have a very light gold or dark cream hackle. This is typical of a lot of US Legbars.

Now that the photo contest is over I can share! Yay! This little boy, Channing, had NO red, brown, or chestnut hint on him at birth so I've tagged him as a keeper. He's only about 4 weeks old now so I can't tell much but...

Your girl is nice also and appears to have a very light gold or dark cream hackle. This is typical of a lot of US Legbars. 

Thanks for the response! About that girl, you couldn't see it in the other pics, but I think she has a major flaw that most would cull her for. Has anyone else seen a legbar pullet with two different color legs? This one had one leg that has almost a green tint to it.

The pic is a few weeks old and my apologies for the blurriness. I had to crop it in really close to get a better look at the legs. Thoughts? I will keep her for eggs, but I'm afraid that breeding her is probably not a good idea. Which, if that is the case, puts me in a place of having to get more pullets. The other girl in this pic, who was my fav since she had the coolest crest, disappeared one night about a week ago. For various reasons we are rebuilding our barn. They are in a temporary enclosure and I'll be danged if she wasn't the only one that disappeared. Not one of the silly BOs or RIRs - no. My fav legbar...

here's one of my boys that i hope doesn't get anymore color. he is 12 weeks old i now. . I like his comb with the slits in the comb being the at the same depth and length of points are the same. now I'm just hoping the wave goes away. The 2ND pic shows the 6 points all though the front point is very small. His sickles are coming in and his earlobes are looking good so far, A light blue color. Father was yellow ears, mother had green tint lol the 3 smaller ones in the bottom pic to the right are 13 weeks old

the green doesnt look like mold or anything up close does it. i see yellow patches between the green.


Edit. i just noticed you said she disappeared. I let my chickens out to free range all day yesterday. I was worried about my CL rooster that i like the most of my original stock and i had a thought that i didn't want to loose him or my black Cochin to hawks or anything. Well sure enough something got the black Cochin. Its always the ones that are most important to you that end up disappearing. the trouble makers and ones that arnt worth anything for breeding just eggs always will always be safe.
