The Legbar Thread!

I'm on the Facebook Cream Legbar page. You guys are pups and very polite on critiques compared to what I've seen on there.
I agree we are pups.. After two years of trying to figure out how to breed Cream Legbars, I am just reaching the point where I think I am starting to understand the visions of what the Cream Legbar is supposed to be. I spent a year learning the history and genetics of the breed, then as I started breeding them I spend time trying to learn to select for good vigor, good production, and worked on breeding plans to keep all my favorite traits from each of my flock members while breeding out defects, etc.. In just the last month I have had some light bulb moments when I have made sense of things about the breed that were a mystery to me.

I too participate in the FB group. While they are experts at distinguishing cream birds from gold birds, hybrids from pure birds, at spotting non-crested birds, at spotting pale yellow legs from bright colored one, at evaluating tail angles, and critiquing combs (although they always give cockerels with bad combs a free pass) no one on that group has every been able to give me insight into some of the major point of the SOP like the shape of the body, the length of the legs, the slope of the back, the width of the bird, the length of the neck, etc. In many regards I feel that the Face Book group in the UK are young pups too. Each group has a different focus and I learn different things there than here. While some critiques can be instructive I don't feel that a harsh critique of every chicken in every photo posted is always necessary (especially when the photo is posted to show a new coop design or the like and some chicken just happen to be in the background with no intention for the birds to even be seen much less critiqued). I can learn just as much from polite group as I do from a cut throat one. and they say you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. :)

I put my colorful roo with neon yellow legs up and expect to get a good flogging. From what I read, I know hes got too much color but I don't care. He's reminds me of an 80s rock star. PS there are lots and lots of pics. Interesting as I study the proposed SOP.

Honestly I think he is sexy. Maybe too much color but he is beautiful regardless.

Edit spelling

I like all the color, would love to have birds that looked like him. He does look like a Rock Star.

Unless you are breeding to win shows I think you should breed birds that please you. You live with them, spend money on them, and enjoy them. Sops are a guideline open to interpretation. Besides, if no one ever played with it we wouldn't have lavenders and cuckoos and lemons and all the other fantastic colors chickens come in. With the Legbars I think the Auto-sexing and blue eggs is of main importance.

Im really thankful our group is polite i think ive been rather cut throat in my critiques of Jill's Birds but I believe that's because that's what she showed me in her critiques of mine. I joined the Facebook group but I don't think I'll use it much. the Ameraucana thread is just like Gary Dean described you don't ask for critiques or they see a bird in the background and the cut throat critiques start flying thats why i dont think ill use the fb group. I really hope we all can keep such a positive outlook towards each other as we work through all this

Edit. I think on here people are quick to point out the good things and what they see that they like. On other threads and places its the opposite

Your rock star Rocks!! I have NEVER seen a red crest like that -- is there some blood in it or is he a red-head? Reason I ask is because someone was showing some white columbian chickens in Heritage thread - and someone else said 'what's the red?' - and she said something like a couple of roosters mixed it up and that one in the photo had some blood on it. (red that color being a bit rare - and shows up so much on white feathers....)

Ice is growing in the wierdest crest as he molts along - it is like David Bowie in ziggie Stardust -- WHAT?? why are these CLs channeling rock stars? Oh - and do you guys have chickens that purrrrrrrr. It is the wierdest thing...I think when they are really cozy and happy Cream Legbars have this purrrrrr - You gotta hear it and you will recognize it. I know my BPRs, Gold Comet, Ideal 236 (Like a hybrid leghorn) , Black Sex-link, Basque and EE- no purring --- CLs -- someone is doing it when they are particularly happy. Purrrrrr-r-r-r-r

Hi madamwlf and everyone,
madamwlf, WHAT??? OMGosh!!! Please elaborate on what you, or people you know, have seen or experienced.

All you have to do is look at their feedback on RBA. There are a few negative feedbacks about sick birds people received. They have shipped birds with Infectious Coryza. I know an individual who had to put down all her birds because of it.

How recent are these comments stating sick birds? That is just horrible for all the people out there buying from them, if it is indeed true.
