The Legbar Thread!

Hi Johnn-

Good seeing you around again.

Did you ever get another Cream Legbar? Mellow sure was a sweet chicken.

Here are some of my girls. My rooster is very colorful. Beautiful so I will be looking for another one for breeding. He has a red back, white wing tips, rest of the wings blue sheen, purple sheen tail, green sheen on back, cream neck and the craziest crest. I love him. He will be great for my egg ladies.

I got pictures of them standing but still nothing?

He is gorgeous. I have been looking for pure chicks in Florida. Only the Pure Bred though, not mixed. Are there any other colors but cream? Anyone know quality reputable breeder in Florida?
?

Finally getting around to sortinh birds for spring breeding pens and noticed that the single comb cockerel I'll be breeding from only lost the very very tips if a couple of his spikes due to frost bite, it is hardly even noticable. So it looks like in addition to the cold hardy rose comb legbars, my single comb birds may do just as good in the north.
And to the folks that keep asking about rose combed legbars for sale, I'm thinking I might auction off a pair soon, the rooster will be my backup male with the high tail, not sure which pullet will go with him yet

They are too young to really tell type. Still plenty of filling out to do. Color may change somewhat after the molt.

Of the three (assuming the side by side pics are of the same chicken) I like the second best for color and shape. She tapers only very slightly toward the tail and doesn't look pinched in the rear; HOWEVER, in that topside photo, her tail is canting to the right. Hopefully it is just the way she is standing and not wry tail. There is a risk of wry tails in the US birds. I know, because my first GFF cock didn't appear to have a wry tail, but he passed the fault on to 85% of his offspring. He's gone now.

The third pullet is very dark and I don't like her tail. No top side pic so I can't tell if it might be pinched or just missing feathers.

The first looks rather gold.

I would keep an eye on pullets 2 & 3 for tails but would keep them all and breed to best cock you can find to see what each is producing and move forward with the best girls bred back to the sire. The goal is to get each succeeding generation better than the one before it.

I only knew Mellow through these threads, and I miss her, too. Some chickens really touch your heart.

I know, she was great! Thanks for your kind words :)

Hi! Basically, this is what happened. You know that I got the eggs to put under the hen that sat with Melow? Well she was being quite stupid with them and I then on week one, she was off the eggs and they were freezing cold and the nest was scratched up. I presumed she had stopped sitting because she didn't appear to have an intention of going back and I was there for an hour. So I cracked the eggs open, only one had a chick in and then I turned around and she was running back to her nest! I was so angry with her! Will maybes try again this year!

I purchased 10 legbars from Greenfire Farms last year. We have lost several due to LL. Be very careful as this can impact other chickens you may own!
