The Legbar Thread!

Hi junibutt. I am not an expert but I have a Light Brahma and know a little about the breed. What's up?
First of all apologies to others for bringing the Brahmas on to this thread. I promise not to bring up the Brahmas after this again:

I have to cut down my flock and may have to give up 2 of the 4 Light Brahma 11 week old chicks that I have. I am posting their pics again and asking your opinion as to which ones are better quality so far. Please don't feel shy letting me know the good and the bad. Here are the pics:

These 3 pics above are of the cockerel Chewie. He is 1000 g (2.2 lbs)

These 2 pics above are of Sapphire. She is the lightest of the 3 pullets. 800 g (1.75 lbs), however, she has the brightest of white in the feathers

These 3 pics above are of Sleepy. She is the friendliest of them, 1092 g (2.4 lbs)

This is the only picture I have of Cutie. She is 1135 g (2.5 lbs), so the heaviest of the 3 pullets. I have also noted that her comb, wattles and area around the eyes has started become red (its evident in the picture as well). Is it because she might be maturing early or contrary to my belief, she might be a cockerel and not a pullet after-all.

Because my mind scatters as soon as I get online- has anyone had a colored crested pullet? Seems like all of the hens I've seen all have that dark crest and a dark head (like an overly melanized wildtype). I was out staring at the older pullets and admiring how a few are coming along when I noticed that my rockstar pullet has a crest that is the same color as the rest of her hackle. I call her my rockstar because ever since she hatched, I have been drawn to her so I hope she turns out great. She is a light brown but a different shade than the others. Her body has a good flow to it too, she just stands out.
I don't have the standard handy (I'm on my phone), does the standard call for a dark head?

Hi Michael---

A little late to the party but here, from SOP draft:

Crest: Cream and gray, some chestnut permissible.

BTW, if you need to reference the draft SOP - you can always go to www.CreamLegbarClub.com (or .org) - and you can reference item 29 in the left navigation bar on that page---and voila - there is the SOP.

here is one of mine:

Not the best photo - but you can see it isn't dark....

Too much crest for my preference, and I was never going to hatch eggs from her---she is a Craig's List purchase, but her comb is very neat and small - and she is less melanized than my normal females---so I may hatch some from her. She also has a good tail-angle.

Thank you. My little pullet is similar to yours, I'll get a picture one of these days. I know what you mean about the crest thing, I have a hen with a big crest like that but I bred from her anyway. Her daughters are ok but the males out of her have a huge crest and a huge comb which to me just looks nasty. Thanks again!

I love Brahmas--very calm and easy to work with chickens. PMing you!

I have a rooster here too - that has the biggest comb and wattles, and his head is so ugly, I have started calling him Mr. Ugly. Poor guy. He has probably the correctest coloring - but that hardly redeems him. It's gotta be tough being a chicken. Yep, when you get a chance post your pullet....

Funny that you guys don't seem to really like much crest on the ladies and I can't get enough of it lol. I think that it why I love the look of the Rees Cream legbars- the girls have such nice crests and hardly any comb. I think it looks neat

I have a girl with a decent crest and hardly any comb- I have been breeding her hoping to decrease combs and increase the crest. Waiting to see what this new generation will look like but so far so good and I am almost positive some of the young ins are Cream

pretty chicken, but is she mature? Looking for a red comb and face.

She was definitely still a pullet in that pic but already laying for me

She still has that nice tiny comb and I'm hoping her offspring will have the same. My oldest girl from her is about 3 months old now

All my other ladies though have the typical large floppy comb so I have just been concentrating on her.

Here is my current roo- aside from that white feather in his tail (that aggravates the heck out of me

) I don't think he looks too bad

Well he's the best I have to work with anyway lol.

I also have a pullet whose crest matches her cream hackles. I'd almost describe it as 'salt and pepper'. I'll try to get a pic of her after work. I'm pretty excited about her.
