Sorry for the confusion. The pen overall is 16' wide, 4' deep, then 8' at the front sloping to 6' at the back. There are plywood sheets around the bottom that go 4' up. The other 2-4' is just 1" chicken wire. The top is sheet metal.

It will be interesting to find out how many roosters/cockerels with gigantic combs survive frost bite. It was only 28 degrees in Chicago last night with wind chills of 14 and my cockerel's comb tips were slightly blue. However I do have my coop open from 1 end at the moment. Last year I closed that when it got below 20 but I did not have any large comb birds last year. Lets see!

I was just thinking man that sounds brutal! Gets cold here in Ky, just not sure it's that bad. I'd have to bring them in the house!!

Here is the pen. The roosts are up towards the top. No issues yet. We get down near -30 in winter here which is why I made the rose combed birds.

Lol. Just FYI my 8 day old chicks are in the coop as well. Their mama is protecting them but they still come out and play sometimes.

Oh my, I didn't know CCL hatching eggs were so expensive. Does anyone know where I could get some that don't cost an arm and a leg?

Are you interested in blue eggs, breeding, or showing? If you're just looking for eggs I would check craigslist, ebay, etc. There are a lot of faulty birds there but some lay beautiful eggs. For breeders or show birds I would check the membership lists at the Cream Legbar Club. You still need to do your research and ask for pics, etc, but prices are coming down for quality birds and hatching eggs. HTH

@ladycat if you really want some now, I can send you some for free (just pay for shipping) but I only have 1 laying right now so only 5-6 eggs will be fresh (less than 1 week old) unless you want to give a try to slightly older eggs (since they are free). As others said if you can wait and invest in a really nice breeding stock, you will have to do your research and select from the parent flock you like. Of course that is subject to what comes out as a result of that cross so should probably ask for pictures of the off springs as well.

I agree completely. Also, if you want quality stock, start with the best you can get. By the time you feed and house them, and do a thousand other little things, the initial cost of the stock is a minor issue. So go for it!

I would like a small group for breeding, but they would be pets more than anything. That one little CCL pullet I have is so naturally sweet she made me fall in love with her. If I had known they were so sweet, I would have already been looking for some.
