The Legbar Thread!

Congrats on a such a great hatch! That's wonderful you got 100% hatch, and a little more pullet heavy is often nice. I can't wait to see the chick pictures.

Sweet dreaming! Congratulations -- that is stellar!

I will check those stock show/rodeo dates....

My first Jill Rees hatch was today! 100% hatch, 19 out of 19, 8 roos, 11 girls. All the girls are traditional chipmunks except one: she's LIGHT. The roos: a couple light, a couple darker, one "grey-ish". These are crosses: the JR Roo and my original good hens + 4 Line D's, and a Line D roo on 2 JR hens. Unfortunately, I got home from an out-of-town job and ALL had already hatched, so I don't know who is from which pen. This is the most fertile and most vigorous hatch I've ever had! (It appears the outcross was a good idea....). I'm in South TX, I will be going to San Antonio Stock Show and Houston Stock Show (w/ horses and cows, no CLB show, unfortunately!!) if anyone would like me to bring some! (Chickat?). I can also ship chicks (but I REALLY want to grow them out to see how the ultra-light JR's crossed on my more "colorful" stock). Pics to follow in a couple of days..... Yippee!

That is quite the hatch!!! Congratulations!

I was able to get a decent pic of my (only) RC legbar cockerel. He seems to be hitting a growth spurt since the others are gone and is filling out. His comb is huge and hideous but I'll use him anyway.

Its good to see you have a male to use for this breeding season. I wish you luck in building your RC Legbars back up again. Do you have plans on what pullets/hens you will pair with him. There seems to be many people lately talking about wanting a more cold hardy Legbar so its nice to see you creating this variety.

For now, all of my legbars are running together. As soon as I repair a pen, I have some hens picked out. I'll breed him to a RC hen and also some pure legbars, maybe a back cross to a show leghorn to fix size and tails (pullets tails are a little pinched)

I just wanted to mention that I'm getting better hatches from my Cream Legbars. I'm not sure if it's maturity or just because the pullets that aren't related to my rooster have started to lay but at this point I know that my related hen is at least somewhat fertile when crossed to the related cockerel and that fertility has gone up. My Cream Legbars all started laying at just about 6 months...maybe just a bit earlier and they are laying really quite well now.
