The Legbar Thread!

That would look interesting but I meant one of my Cream Legbar females. :)
I think the coloring would be impossible....but quite interesting.

My little pullet has an almost black looking crest (but of course she is colored traditionally)...I think her crest looks like a page-boy bob hairstyle that used to be worn by president Kennedy's wife, Jackie. I could photoshop a creamlegbar female and turn the feathers white...... (too much time on my hands if I have time to do that I guess.)

Wait wait!!! Just found this thread.

I ordered 5 cream legbar chicks from Greenfire Farms end of March. I just put one down middle of May as she had all the symptoms of Mareks Disease despite having been vaccinated. She was unable to walk one morning and was making silent gasping movements with her neck and head. She soon developed the one leg out in front and was unable to stand or sit up without support. Eventually one leg started sitting out the back. She was my favorite and I nursed her for weeks dying with guilt that I shouldn't as I might pass the bug on to one of my other chicks. None of my other birds caught it yet she was in a pen where half the chicks had not been vaccinated. Was it not Mareks??

It is possible it was mareks, none of my oegb got it and they weren't vaccinated. Only a necropsy can confirm...but the leg out back was the dead giveaway for me ...

I got some interesting ones in this hatch. I have a female that has a black spot on her head.

Congrats on all the babies! Lots of whites too

Did any of your whites hatch with leg feathers? I had one White Legbar girl hatch with light feathering on her legs- she lost those feathers though and is now completely clean legged- weird.

I wonder what bird was used in their creation that was feather legged?

Here she is at a couple days old.

So sorry for your loss

I never get vaccinated chicks anymore- they seem to be healthier without the vaccine (In my experience at least). My understanding is the vaccine does not prevent them from getting it, it just masks the signs of it. What good is that- I would rather know when a bird is spreading something.

I completely agree. These were my first birds vaccinated for Mareks and I've had 4 I've had to put down due to problems.

I am not 100% sure but I believe a newly vaxed chick can shed and transmit Mareks to any unvaccinated chicks within a couple weeks time span. So you can potentially introduce Mareks to your flock from the vaccine.

Please correct me if I'm wrong so I am not spreading bad info.

I'm talking about my 2.5 month old Legbars. I think the vaccine makes it so that they don't shed Mareks. Either way, these guys aren't in with my adult birds. They are in a pen by themselves. Plus, I think adults don't really get Mareks unless stressed.

Don't remember seeing any with white feathers on their legs. I need to get a good look at them all to determine the sex of the Whites. I swear it looks like I have only 2 roos out of 10 chicks.

In my opinion , saying the vaccine is causing these problems is like saying the polio vaccine causes problems ...
So, if you get the polio vaccine after exposure to the disease, the vaccine is useless and you contract polio so I would assume the same principle can be applied to any vaccination....
